There has been no change in polio vaccine recommendation as of now. So if you received the 4 doses as recommended previously, then you are vaccinated. If you’ve never been vaccinated then you can get the vaccine as an adult.
Now whether or not that recommendation is going to change, who knows, but no we’re not all unvaccinated if you previously got the 4 dose series.
Wouldn’t we all be unvaccinated at this point since we got vaccinated I don’t even know when.
From a quick google search, I don’t think it’s known how long the vaccine is protective in the general public. But, anecdotally, my H happened to have his annual checkup right when the news about the NY case came out, so he had his antibodies checked. He still has high levels of antibodies 40+ years after his last dose, so hopefully that is indicative of how most people are.

Yes, a few months ago I had all my antibodies checked and I'm still protected from polio (I'm 40).

pixy0stix, I also recently found my handwritten vaccine record, it's in a little blue book. I had 5 doses of oral polio vaccine in the late 70s and early 80s, I'm guessing that is equivalent to 4 shots. There was a brief period after I had a severe allergic reaction to my MMR shot that my mom was super vaccine hesitant with me, so I'm glad to see this. Fortunately, she's all in on vaccines again. Hopefully my polio vaccine is holding up as well as my single MMR shot. I have my MMR antibodies checked every few years, I'm due for a recheck, I'll have them throw a polio titer too.
Related but random, I found my original handwritten vaxx card, and the polio vaxx stood out to me.
My mom is super organized plus we were a military family so moved a lot so she needed records, so I still have my original vaccine record card with all my vaccines from birth to 17. I’ve realized that’s not normal lol.

I had my mmr antibodies checked, and had to get it again. My measles antibodies weren't there.
So should we start worrying about our kids who aren’t fully vaccinated yet? I think my younger 2 have had 3/4 of the vaccines. I’m in NY, but closer to Albany.

3 vaccines are good protection. The 4th and final dose isn’t given till age 4.
I should have a newborn in Oct/Nov and between covid, flu, monkeypox and polio, I plan to continue to stay in a "bubble" until 6 months when they can be vaccinated for polio (3 shots), flu and covid. After that I don’t think I’ll continue to change daily actions drastically (like avoiding subway, planes, etc)
Polio is spread fecal oral route so reminder for continued good hand hygiene for all of us.
When I had my vaccination status checked about 7-8 years ago, the only one I was no longer immune to was chicken pox - the only disease I actually caught as a child. Polio, MMR, etc were all good. So I got 2 varicella vaccines.

I have never once checked a polio titer on a patient because most physical forms don’t ask for polio vaccine to be updated or proof of it. It’s always been measles, mumps, rubella and more recently chicken pox that have been the ones people need of proof for employment. Even the order to check the titers has those 4 together. I wonder if that’ll change over time and more places will want to see polio as well.

When I graduated high school I was given the vaccine record my school district had for me from K-12. My mom and H's mom also gave us our original vaccine record card as adults.

We have a box of misc childhood stuff from the in-laws. During some move, we culled a lot of it (first communion record type stuff). I know I saw his little blue book vaccine record in there. 90% chance that, back in the 2011 move, we tossed it. Because, it seemed irrelevant.

I had mine added to my record in the military emr. I probably still have the card somewhere.
I did get a booster recommended by the travel clinic as I was traveling through an area with an active outbreak. The clinic was military, and they just kind of their everything at people for deployment, so they just added me to the line. I'm not sure a civilian clinic would have recommended it since I did have evidence of childhood opv series

I have to check, but I’m pretty sure polio was one of the vaccines I got before my most recent deployment. Yep, they just kind of throw vaccines at us! “Here, have one of these, and one of these, and let’s update your….”
We had to take our kid’s vaccine record to his new civilian doctor for his school physical, and it was over a page long. He’s 8. Gotta love military medicine!

lol! But I think that's just a standard kid vaccine sheet. We have generic Kaiser coverage and the vaccine print out is usually two pages.

My grandfather had polio. He was left permanently disabled from it and walked with a cane his whole life. He was lucky to live (not all of his family did). My grandfather was adamant about all of his children getting their immunizations as a result. It’s about the only time he ever interfered or gave parenting advice.
