I figured this might be good for others to know.
We had a flight scheduled for 10 am that was cancelled (not because of weather or anything), and they rebooked us on a midnight flight. We had to stay an extra day in a hotel.
I wrote to the airline asking for reimbursement for the hotel and they sent something back that was like, "We value you as a customer! We've deposited miles in your account!"
It wasn't even clear that I could reply, but I did and basically said, "I don't want miles, I want you to reimburse me for the hotel room." They responded back and said that they would!

The DOT has a site that outlines what major airlines’ reimbursement policies are for cancelled flights that are due to reasons within their control (“ A controllable flight cancellation or delay is essentially a delay or cancellation caused by the airline. Examples include: maintenance or crew problems; cabin cleaning; baggage loading; and fueling.”)

That’s great!
The EU has so many more protections for consumers and I sincerely hope we move in that direction. H once spent a night sitting on the tarmac during a snowstorm; now at least they have regulations around that.

@ A trick I’ve used is to ask them to move credits for my kids to my name since I travel alone with them often. For example, for a delayed flight we each got a $100 credit, but you can’t combine them and I don’t like booking my kids separate if I can help it. If they move the $300 to my name only, I can get a free flight for me or use it when I book one family reservation. There’s a lawyer on IG who always posts about stuff like this. I think it’s @ Erikankullberg
