As we head in cooler season, I am evaluating my coat situation. There's a new coat I am pining for but I think I am reaching max capacity. It's a beautiful coat. But I don't NEED it. How many jackets/coats do you have that are actually in your rotation and get worn?
I have a northface ski coat, two warm winter coats (patagonia and llbean) for every day winter wear, a dress coat (gap) and then like maybe 2 fleeces? I think that is it.
My son and husband on the other hand probably both have between 9-12 if not more. We live in northern New England, though, and are outside a lot, lol.
Off the top of my head: -two fleece jackets, one with a shell exterior -One cotton jacket -2 puffer vests -one peacoat -1 puffer coat -1 super warm ll bean coat from when I lived in Boston for grad school -rain jacket
Two winter (long and short puffers), two fall (short wool, short puffer), one rain, two spring - so I guess 7 total. I have sweatshirts and a vest also. I live in the mid-Atlantic where we really get all 4 seasons.

For winter I have a knee length down North Face with hood that's usually my every day warm winter coat. Then I have a waist length Under Armor that's more athletic geared, I bought it for cold weather running and wear it when I'm running errands in sweats. I do own a dressier one but really never wear it.
I don't have a lot of clothes either but for some reason I can't stop buying coats (and sweatshirts). I should preface my list with the disclosure that I get coats at a pretty good discount.
I have:
An old LL Bean knee length down for snowplay/messy outdoors A full length down for below freezing dog walking and frigid days A hip length stylish down for everyday cold weather when I want to look nice A 3/4 length mid weight down alternative that is super thin so great for in and out of car (note: this coat is ugly) A full length cashmere for formal wear A cute white fleece for daily wear/casual An old grey fleece for running A waterproof jacket A water resistant jacket (more stylish - spring type) A cute water resistant bomber that looks great with jeans etc. for a night out in fall weather
ETA: This coat would be "want to look nice and cover my butt/going out"

I'm realizing I really own way too many clothes.
I live in Florida, and I own-- A ski jacket A rain jacket 2 fleece jackets 2 long wool coats, but I doubt I could button them any longer
And I really want to buy a new Patagonia nano puff jacket (because I could actually wear that occasionally at home, unlike the ski jacket), as well as a nicer rain jacket.
So many. I am a jacket/coat person and I live where there are 4 distinct seasons so I have many weather needs!
Without actually checking the closet, I can picture: Navy down & faux leather coat with a fur hood (everyday winter coat) Ski jacket Working outside when it's cold down coat Camel dressy car coat Suede and fur very dressy full-length coat (inherited from my grandma) Suede and shearling not-so-dressy vintage coat that I bought to be part of my Penny Lane costume and can't stop wearing Brown leather jacket (vintage) Black moto jacket (so old it's now also vintage...) Another black moto jacket that's lighter weight 2 (3?) jean jackets Green field jacket White fleece Pink fleece Black rain jacket Pink puffer vest Lightweight trench coat
Good question. I have too many, yet I struggle with which should go.
I'm not completely uninterested in fashion and having the right clothes for the right occasion, but I'm not a real fashionista and also am VERY interested in cleaning out my house. I should be more motivated to pare down my collection.
Winter coat I both love and use
Winter coat I haven't used in years but is dressier than #1, so I can't seem to let it go...just in case!
Ski jacket that's way too big and hasn't been used in years, yet cost a lot, so...
Rain coat I bought in college (!) that's very basic and functional, but also seems...young somehow. But it's fine, so why buy another?
Rain coat that's classier and longer, which I love, but also lacks a hood, which seems so impractical!
Waist-length fall/spring coat that's fashionable, fits well, and has a hood so works in lots of weather. But it doesn't cover my butt, so it somehow isn't right for every occasion.
White coat I bought in my 20s that is so incredibly impractical, I have to laugh. But I also love it and don't want to get rid of it.
Late-fall/early-spring coat that's basic, but kind of cute without exactly being fashionable (more like it goes with anything) and covers my butt.
Leather jacket that's old and ill-fitting but also in great condition and cost a lot, so it's tough to toss. Why am I like this?

1.long puffer that I didn't need last year so it stayed in a closet the entire time. 2.wool dressy jacket - use it from mid-autumn until almost mid-spring 3.long waterproof jacket with a removable liner (primarily for walking the dog through 3 seasons) 4. very thin waterproof jacket (primarily for summer rain) 5. a bunch of blazers 6. two jean jackets 7. two fleece jackets 8. ski jacket 9. leather jacket that is so old and worn but it's so soft and fits like a glove
I love outerwear but try to keep it reasonable. I have and wear regularly: Warm winter jacket Lighter/transitional winter jacket Puffy vest Two fleece jackets Dressy wool coat (this doesn’t get much wear) Warm-ish rain jacket More polished rain jacket for work
I’m not going to count, I’ll be embarrassed. A lot. I live in Boston. Winter is a slog of despair. I enjoy fun outerwear to cheer myself up and get through it.

I have a closet full of coats of various weights. I am actually surprised how few some people on here have! I guess it depends on the climate where you live and what you do outside. Coats get dirty, wear out and go out of style, you should get a new one!
Seeing your link - some of my Athleta jackets are my most worn, particularly in the fall/spring. They are well made and look great - but it!
Most of my coats are Athleta! I know they last and for the most part, they are classic in style. I get them at a discount too. That's why I am so quick to pull the trigger

I live in NYC so it gets cold. My one winter coat is a thick, warm black coat that I get cleaned regularly and is a pretty classic style and can be worn for a variety of events (plus just for going outside). Not everyone has the closet space to store a ton of coats.

I have a lot, but the newest is probably 4 years old. I tend to keep older jackets “just in case”. I have one down sweater jacket that I wear 90% of the time. A big puffy jacket, 3 ski jackets, 2-3 rain jackets, and probably 3 vests, I also have 2 fleece jackets that I don’t wear. All of them are a few years to 20 years old, but I guess I like options? I don’t know why I haven’t donated more of them- especially the old rain jackets that aren’t really waterproof anymore- they don’t do me much good on a hike.

I live California (although we do like to travel). I have:
-a three-in-one Patagonia that can transition from real winter to our “winter” -a suede jacket that’s fall weight (and perfect for our winter if it’s not raining) -two packable rain shells that are good for both travel and wet weather hiking (one was a freebie/company-issued swag but it’s Vuori so it’s nice) -an unstructured blazer that’s not heavy at all but good when it’s jussst cool enough to need something
(I used to have one of those olive green J. Crew jackets and I wore it to death but then I gained weight and it doesn’t fit anymore. I could probably use one more jacket like that, but I’m waiting for inspiration to strike. I don’t think I need another several years of the same coat.)
I have a puffy coat that is good for casual wear and snow.
I have a dress coat for work/nicer occasions.
I have a couple fleeces.
That's it. We all rarely wear coats unless we will be outside for extended periods. Otherwise we just deal with the walk to/from the car without a coat.
1 winter coat. I live in Michigan, its gotta be a puffy coat that makes me look like a marshmallow or else I'm freezing. I have given up on fashion, I'm just trying to stay alive 🤣

Too many. Coats are one of things I'm trying to purge.
- ski jacket - long puffer - short puffer - wool dress coat - waterproof shell - waterproof shell with hood - fleece
I also have two rain coats. One is very practical & does a great job of keeping me dry, but it's bright yellow and a bit stiff, not very breathable. I wear that one the most, usually to walk the dog on wet days. The other is softer, slightly dressier and burgundy, so if I needed to wear a rain coat to church or a work function, I would wear that one.
