I took today and tomorrow off to tackle some projects in the yard. One project is clearing a section of yard and planting new grass seed. Another project is going to remove a decent chunk of dirt from one area. Some of that excess dirt will go to filling in some dips in the yard. I'm wondering if I can spread anything that's left I have to the area I plan to seed? Or am I better off buying "top soil" for seeding? Today is mostly prep day and plan to seed tomorrow afternoon.
It depends so much on what kind of soil you have. Ours is really heavy clay, which is very different from a sandier mix. Clay is sub-ideal for what you're describing.
Grass seed is not expensive though, so you can always try it and see if it's successful, and adapt in the future only if necessary.
I truly have no idea what kind of soil I have. I would guess it's not clay heavy.
I am hoping to pick my neighbor's brain - he's done an incredible job revitalizing his lawn since moving in a couple of years ago. And of course he doesn't appear to be home today haha (retirees, usually home during the day).
