Building cars is really hard and complex, especially for a new start-up (see also Tesla....) Also, 13K cars isn't really that many compared to many other OEM recalls. But I guess they haven't sold many vehicles. I did see some the other day in SFO or Portland at the Hertz to rent.
Sounds like a relatively minor issue. We saw one when we went to breakfast last weekend. DH was surprised to see it and didn't realize they were actually selling them.
I guess one issue is that there aren’t a lot of places to get the recall fixed, so they’re doing pop-ups. One thing people don’t realize is, EV dealers aren’t as prevalent.
So if you’re Chevy breaks down, there’s likely someone who can fix it. EVa will have to build to that presence.
I don’t have an opinion either way, just interesting on the recall and that’s it’s all cars from the brand.
I’d never seen a Rivian until about 3 weeks ago when I saw a truck and walked around it in the parking lot checking it out. Since then I’ve seen 4 others. I’m always intrigued by new vehicles. And given the recalls I’ve had on my “regular” car this doesn’t seem too bad.
I feel like these trucks (and more recently cars) are all over Seattle. There are several in my neighborhood. I was just saying to my parents last night that after my Jeep Renegade and then Subaru Ascent, I'm done buying vehicles in the first release year.
I saw one of the trucks recently and was like "what the eff is that?!" I had no clue about them, haha. They look very different than your standard truck

Yep, this is my rule too. Had a horrible horrible time with 2 Subarus in my immediate family and something else that I can’t remember now.

Yeah, we've had three on dh's 2015 Forester since we got it three years ago.
Welp, that is interesting. This will be H's next car- he's just waiting on his reservation to be called up. Minor issue in the grand scheme, but nice that they are staying on top of it.

Not only have I never seen one, I had never heard of this company until this thread. Which is 100% unsurprising b/c a) I don't follow anything about cars and b) I live in a place where import taxes alone can double the cost of a car, although not too long ago they way reduced it for EVs to something like 10%.
This seems pretty minor and proactive. I've gotten countless minor recall notices on various cars.

Yeah this is certainly an issue. We got a Polestar and part of the reason why was because they can get serviced at Volvo dealers. But there aren't many EVs that aren't with established brands. Rivian is really the only one that is "mass" marketed now in the US that I can think of that isn't connected to a large brand.
I’m curious about how this happened on 13,000 vehicles. I work in the automotive industry (though not with Evs yet) but anything that is related to steering is considered a safety joint and requires torque control. We have to log the torques for traceability purposes. While there are ways to circumvent the auto controls and have 1 or 2 vehicles have this occurrence wouldn’t be surprising but for 13,000 it sounds like they likely didn’t even have the torque control set up. This is actually very worrisome.

I'm guessing maybe it was a design error. They didn't specify a high enough torque, maybe because they didn't do enough or the right kind of testing. That based on a totally different industry.
Or if they didn't have the torque drivers calibrated correctly. But if they recalibrate every 6-12 months it still wouldn't be all of them.

There is a one in my neighborhood and I got so excited when I saw it! I first heard about them after watching the last installment of the Long Way series with Ewan McGregor. He and his friend Charley Boorman traveled on motorcycles around the world. The last one done in 2019 was to go from Patagonia up to Los Angeles. They did it using all electric vehicles. Harley Davidson was just coming out with an all electric bike and they got in touch with Rivian to make these trucks. They were pretty cool but definitely had some design kinks. I guess Rivian is still trying to work those out.
