I feel like parsing out midterms-related information and commentary from the monthly politics thread especially now that elections have begun sooooo here you go.
Georgia just blew away the 1st day of early voting turnout record.

Also, I know every New Yorker here will vote but tell all your non-GOP friends and family in NY to get out and vote too. I have always been afraid that Zeldin could sneak up and pull an upset over Hochul for Governor and these polls are making me even more worried even though they may not be reliable. If anyone is concerned about crime and inflation (which, a lot of people are) they could simply decide to vote for "change." And many D voters just assume we'll always be safely blue, so they need to show the hell up.
I am losing my damn mind here in New Mexico with a former weatherman who is running as the R for Governor. He's such an ass clown, no experience other than being a weatherman, total Trump-ist and his commercials run all.the.damn.time.

Sounds like a playbook from Arizona with Lake. That woman is awful.
I’m REALLY hoping we’ve underestimated the young voter turnout, and they come in droves to vote out the GOP. 🤞

Kari Lake and her dumb softening filter need to disappear and I don’t even live in AZ. She seems awful.

I know that I will vehemently disagree with virtually every single vote Evan McMullin casts if he is elected to the Senate. I will also be enthusiastically casting my vote for him because Mike Lee is a horrible human being who could not care less about what most/many Utahns care about. At least McMullin isn't an insurrectionist.
Also, it pisses me the hell off that my county was divided into fourths so I can no longer vote against Burgess Owens. His opponent is an amazing community organizer who would make a great Congresswoman, but she's definitely going to lose thanks to our shitstain legislature's gerrymandering. That same gerrymandering, BTW, put my street in one district, our zoned elementary school in a second, my parents (who live five minutes away) in a third, and the school where I teach (15 minutes from home) into a fourth. It's no coincidence that I live in the bluest county in the bluest city in Utah. The Republicans hate us just that much.

My dad told me the current governor bought my vote giving raises to teachers. And I’m like… well it was a darn good raise but seriously look at the clown running against her?!?
Charles Booker has been working his ass off in KY to defeat Rand Paul. I see a lot of Booker signs, but I am not in the more rural areas of the state. Paul did not show up during the catastrophic flooding in E. KY, voted against legislation to help, etc. Booker just kicked off a 3 week bus tour of the state leading up to the election. This man has heart.

Yeah I can’t blame you or anyone in Utah for going all in for McMullin. Mike Lee is even more awful than the typical GOP awfulness. I’m glad he seems to be sweating a bit.
There’s a lot of rich people that are convinced he will magically lower the property tax the second he’s sworn in.
Meanwhile I’m pretty certain that the bulk of property taxes here fund municipal items and don’t go to the state.
I was going to ask about this. I am/was under the impression that property taxes were set by municipalities? I don’t think the government has anything to do with it.
I hate to even say this out loud/type it so I don’t jinx it, but we actually have a shot at a Dem governor in Oklahoma this November. Granted, the candidate was a Republican until a year ago, and the incumbent is egregiously corrupt and has pissed off his own party and the Tribes. But still, it’s something!

Right. We have state income tax anyway. It’s also why suburban taxes are so high too - a relatively small population is paying for their own school districts, police departments, other municipal services, etc.

Overhearing these people, it seems that they don’t understand how any of this works here…at all.

They just want low taxes, low density and high services. What's so complicated about that?
I'm too scared to feel much hope for Beto but god I want to. Even if the legislature stays red he can veto any more abortion bullshit, stop CPS investigations into parents of trans kids, and potentially fix the power grid.
The GA race between Walker and Warnock makes me very very nervous. I think Kemp is definitely going to win, but the thought of Walker winning makes me want to pack up and move from this state.

I saw he had a big rally yesterday that Lin-Manuel was a part of, and I hope it helped! Rooting for a Beto win from up here in WA!
In IA, Dem candidate Franken is within the margin of error in his race against Grassley. I hesitate to even get my hopes up. This race has been written off early by the national democratic as Franken has not reportedly received much support. Also this race hasn't received much attention, which I think is actually a good thing. I think when national attention enter the arena it actually hurts races around here.
This is an Ann Seltzer poll which is considered the gold standard for polling.

Patty Murray is pushing the abortion agenda pretty hard in her campaigning on social media, and she recently had Secretary Pete up here to look at our infrastructure surrounding salmon runs. It's on her Instagram if you want to look, it was kind of fun to see him up here.
The down ballot, hyper-local races are kind of getting hairy, lots of mudslinging and the Rs are coming out bigtime trying to get in on things.

I know there's a whole laundry list of why Grassley is awful but honestly, if it's his age that takes him down, so be it. I don't think any 89 year old has any business being in the Senate.

Yeah - she pushed through a huge (relatively speaking) bump in pay for teachers across the board.
But I look at the alternative, and wonder how anyone could think that he'd be better. I do still worry though because so many people were angry at how she locked down things during COVID because of how small our healthcare system is here.

I’m very nervous about our turnout. In general. And I see that Bernie, and AOC are now going out to rally young people at separate events. Makes me think they’re also nervous.

I still can't believe he's running again. Iowans who vote for him and also think Biden is old and senile need to think about that for a moment.

Maybe it's because Walker is getting all the attention plus you don't have Trump in the WH right now, but the Kemp/Abrams matchup is definitely getting less attention than it did in 2018 and so I get the same sense that Kemp will win more handily. Which is crazy given what's happened in GA since 2020.

Let's see if this means there truly are more voters this year or if they all just wanted to get voting out of the way!
Strange what happens when the legislature narrowly revokes exclusive property rights to one’s own organs.
I’m just waiting until my daughters can go vote with me.
Hi there - I see you are new to the boards. Welcome! As an FYI, on this specific board (Current Events & Politics), we ask posters to put @@@@@s before any content relating to kids, or to leave out the kid-related content altogether. The rationale is so that this board can be the one board on this entire website where people can come and not have to wade through kid content. The "rule" was originally created as a kindness to some of our more regular posters who struggled with infertility or had lost children, so that it can be a place of respite for them. The @@@@@s serve as kind of a warning that there is kid-talk ahead, so people can skip over that paragraph if they need to.
