Anyone watching? I don't even live in PA (my brother does), but I'm fascinated by this race. Fetterman isn't as polished as Oz and his speech seems affected by the stroke. Oz apparently wanted 6 debates (!!!!) knowing Fetterman doesn't come across well in debates. I hope Fetterman comes out of this debate okay.
I turned it on for a bit. It is obvious his speech is a little impaired, due to the stroke. However, I hope his campaign shows his strengths, and pushes back hard on what will be the inevitable attacks from the right and others citing his debate performance. I fear that even the media is going to hyper focus on his speech, playing right into the hands of the right.
I wonder if the lack of elaboration, actually helps him maybe? for example, on the abortion question Oz wanted to get into more detail regarding Fetterman's past positions or words. but Fetterman repeated simply, he's for Roe v Wade. that's it.
Fetterman's aphasia (what they are publicly calling an auditory processing disorder) has been pushed extremely hard in the past several weeks. There even was a "blow up" over an NBC news report calling out his use of real time closed captioning for comprehension and a transcribed interview that included every "uh" or "um".
Critiques include accusations of ableism, not calling out others for modifications such as need for an interpreter or hearing aids or even glasses for that matter.
My high horse in all of these I'd the lack of understanding (or willingness!) that aphasia is not of indicator of cognition, it is a communication barrier. I also got heated by this at work I would always see documentation/hear report that someone had dementia/confused/xyz because there was a neurological gap that some people can work around ( at times by reading, writing, talking around, etc)
I find the fixation on his speech to be so frustrating. Every headline is about his speech and not about Oz’s performance. Just writing headlines for clicks instead of going for substance.
I had a moderate stroke 10 years ago, when I was 40. My only side effect was aphasia, and it resolved itself in a few months. (Well, I mean, I also 'lost' the ability to read at the very beginning but that resolved itself in a few days). I second the poster that said it's not an indicator of lost cognition, and given Fetterman's age, I also expect him to recover completely in a few months, like I did.
I want someone to tell me I'm not intelligent because I have an auditory processing disorder. It'd be fun. Lol!
Yes. I stutter, mostly when I am really worked up or anxious, and I was like “please come after stuttering because I will end you” when folks brought up Biden’s stutter. Please, try me. And fuck you kindly.
