The last time I had a two-year-old was 10 years ago. The first time I had a two-year-old was almost 16 years ago. I knew my way around then; I stayed “in the know.” Now… I have NO idea. I don’t even remember the sites that I used to visit, nor do I even know if these things are done anymore (such as a “mystery” shopper).
Can many of you make suggestions? My little one goes to preschool twice per week but only for four hours at a time. I desperately want to earn some money, not only so I can have a little stash of my own (so I’m not buying my DH Christmas presents with his/“our” money), but also some money to help towards getting my almost 18 y/o son another car.
He had been driving a 20 year oldE class Mercedes, but we bought it at such an inexpensive price that we only put the most basic coverage on it… and recently all warning signs came on, so it wasn’t drivable, but the icing on the cake was when our basketball hoop randomly smashed into the windshield in such a way that there’s glass shards everywhere! the car can only be given away for parts at this point. I think a junk car collector is coming by (sometime soon, hopefully!) and giving us $550. So money towards something less than 15 yrs old that will take him through college. Or even helping pay for any extras he’ll need for college (starting Fall 2023).
Ugh, sorry for the TL;DR. Mainly, I just want to contribute!!! But I’m limited. FWIW I have a bachelor’s degree. So please, any “work at your own pace” type jobs (NO MLM), internet jobs (I think what I am referring to is now called gigs or some thing??) Also no Uber type and no Door dash types either (my car is only a few years old, and still has that new smell, so I don’t want food in it). Sorry, that sounds picky. Ok so anyone, please direct me to gig jobs, or other jobs that you work when you are able. Thank you in advance!!
Dog sitting? Professional baking? I know a woman who does cake pops out of her home kitchen (non professional kitchen). Editing or copy writing part time gigs. Creating products on Cricut.

If you live in a suburban or urban area, I think pet sitting is your best bet. It’s not exactly work when you are able, but you could, take jobs based on your availability. I do agree with PP that you could also find a job doing childcare, but I don’t get the impression that’s what you’re after. I think the kind of part time, when you want, desk work is going to be tricky to find.
If you have a local Facebook moms group, you may be able to connect with people who are looking for help.
The most common need in my group is babysitting, but I’ve seen others ask for help with cleaning, cooking, running errands, etc. I’ve connected with a couple families about babysitting and it’s been the best gig ever. Going rate for a teenage babysitter here is $15/hr and I charge $20. I get most of my jobs on Friday and Saturday nights, when the younger babysitters are too busy having fun lives. It gives me a little break from my kids, I watch the other kids for maybe an hour or two before getting them to bed, and then just relax for a few hours and typically make around $100 for the evening. It’s tax free and I can take jobs as I’m available. I love it.
Are you open to working at your child’s school? You may bring in some cash and get a discount on tuition. ETA: You could also offer to sub to see how it goes and if it’s your kind of thing. Subs are always in demand!
I think babysitting or work at your kids school is your best bet. I don't think the time/money commitment of other endeavors really pays off, like making cookies or tshirts or other things unless you're really passionate and find it enjoyable. If you're able to work nights/weekends there's lots of seasonal work right now at like target or grocery stores.
Honestly when I'm trying to get a little extra cash I make a real effort to do what I can at home, and then "pay" myself for it. Like instead of eating out I'll make an effort to really cook every meal at home and that's an extra $80 we didn't spend out. Purge the house and sell some stuff on FB marketplace.
Go to indeed.com. I find the desktop version easier to navigate than the app. Next to "what," type in "work from home." Next to "where," type in "remote." See what's out there. You need a resume, Indeed has a built-in one that you can fill out (that's what I did but I'm not super serious about finding something).
I periodically run the above search though I really don't need to be adding more to my plate with a 4 year old with endless energy. If he ever calms down, maybe I'll look more seriously.
I agree with others that babysitting in my HCOL area is the best option for $$/hr. I know a lot of people who need short coverage for before or after school care a couple days a week and are willing to pay a premium, if you want something regular without a huge commitment. You could also throw it out to your kids classmates parents for occasional pick up and babysitting if they have a late work event.
There’s a couple companies that hire for virtual English tutoring with a bachelor degree, but usually the hours are early due to the time change.
There’s some virtual admin / temp type agencies, but whether the assignments work for your schedule may be hit or miss. Some places want set hours. Others may have tasks an admin could do anytime day or night.
Join local mom/ neighborhood online groups. We have a lot of small business owners in our neighborhood and they often need a little extra help during busy periods and are very flexible with kids and schedules.
If you have a hobby or household task you enjoy, see if that can translate into a side gig, like teaching a fitness class 1 evening a week, doing meal prep/ freezer meals, laundry or home organization to other moms who need help.
