I liken it to being on a diet. It is easier to follow a plan to get to a goal, than to trust yourself to stick to that plan forever after you have hit the goal.
So just like you can lose the weight, look/feel good, but still feel like the unhealthy version of you, you used to be - Old habits die hard. And it can take years to change the mental aspect that years and years of bad choices have created.
