A House panel voted along party lines Tuesday to release former President Trump’s tax returns, an unprecedented move that marks the culmination of a years-long legal battle to disclose his financial records.
The argument that this sets a horrible precedent is ridiculous. Don't lie on your taxes and you have nothing to worry about.
I'm sure this is a problematic opinion on some level but I have no problem having elected officials' and Supreme Court Justices' taxes being scrutinized.

I think anyone who runs for federal office or is appointed to a public-serving federal role should have to share tax returns. After this crazy story about George Santos, I realized it's ridiculous that we have no standards (or pretend to have them, with ethics committees that won't do anything) for people who run for office but those of us who just need a regular paying job have to go through the ringer with background checks, drug tests, and much more depending on the job.

Not being transparent also sets a terrible precedent.
So does overthrowing the government, but apparently that increases your chances of re-election. 🥳

The lack of ethics standards for SCOTUS is egregious.
All of this ::waves hands:: is bananas. Jobs and landlords check people’s credit ratings, but Presidents and lifelong Justices— pshaw.

lololll Pixy’s article but he is totally clean: The release of Trump’s tax information is the most sweeping such action taken by Congress in a half-century. A similar action involving a president has not occurred since 1973, when the IRS turned over President Richard M. Nixon’s tax returns to a congressional committee.
I wish we could know what the laundered Russian money looks like in the returns. (Even typing that out makes me seethe with rage about Yanukovych and Manafort)

Yeah, it sort of reeks of “don’t carry weed if you don’t want to get stopped” but I feel the same. BUT, it’s his choice to commingle all the finances so that we get to see it all. It’s not the same as seeing Joe Schmoe from down the street’s 1040.

Trump's returns weren't audited by the IRS during his first two POTUS years despite their mandate to do so. I initially assumed it was due to underfunding of the IRS, but they managed to audit Obama's returns every year during his presidency AND Biden's returns every year he's been POTUS so far. Shady shady shady.

As a CPA, I have been interested in seeing the returns, but they are mostly worthless without the supporting documentation. There’s a lot that raises my eyebrows but you can’t tell whether anything is legit without asking more questions.
I will say after looking at the returns and reports; it’s super frustrating that none of these returns were audited. We get information on “hot issues” each year which Trumps return hit in spades for millions and he wasn’t even looked at. Why am I freaking out about a relatively aggressive ~$1000 deduction for a small business when Trump has multimillions in sketchiness without a second glance?
