We are redoing our powder room on our main floor. The wall with the sink is 66” long and we are looking for a vanity that will work in the space. Our builder suggested 60” or 54”. But 60 will only give us 3 inches on either side, which seems annoying when it comes to cleaning. 54 is better, but not a standard size and easy to find. The next size down is 48”, but not sure that will look too small?
If you have a standalone vanity, especially with nothing else on the same wall, how much space do you have on either side?
I would do the 60" vanity with two 3" trim pieces on either side taking up the gap, then a 66" counter top. End result is wall to wall with maximum storage.
Alternatively, I think 48" would be fine, and definitely big enough for a powder room.

We currently have wall to wall cabinets and countertops in that room, and we were trying to go for a different look. But it’s becoming a headache and I sort of wish we had just agreed to the wall to wall cabinetry they had initially suggested

I also prefer the vanity as furniture look (so not up to the wall). I just measured my primary bath and the 72” vanity is 8” off the wall. So I’d go for the small vanity - I don’t store much in main floor powder rooms, guessing you don’t need the space. . 3” would be very tight.

Yes, storage isn’t a big issue. As it is now, I have two drawers and 3 cabinets and all are pretty empty

If it's just a powder room on the main level and not primary bathroom for any of the family I don't think counter or cabinet space is a huge concern, so I'd likely go with the 48" and just find something I really love in that standard size rather than compromising on something that's 54" and not your preference. Even with the 48" that's still only 10" on each side, it'll have more of that "furniture" look, and that should be plenty of room for both counter and storage.
I might tape it off on the floor just to get a sense but that's probably what I would do, and four feet of vanity in a powder room doesn't seem like it would look too dinky to me under any circumstances.
