This man is fighting for his life. Can we leave the "NFL is the devil" discussion out of this right now.
May I ask why? It’s not like we’re talking directly to him/his family. I think it’s important to highlight and critically think about these issues.
Just like every time there’s a mass shooting or school shooting I do not find fault in people talking about our gun culture and how fucked up the NRA is.

Because these discussions always focusd on JUST football and not all the other sports that cause serious harm also.
I would be happy to have a discussion about all the sports that are messed up but I just don't think this thread is the place for it.

Roger Goodell, is that you?
It's no secret I have a prior affilitaion with the NFL and I have many friends and acquaintences who work for it. I am not blind to the league and all the faults. But they are far from the only sport that has problems.

Well there is a specific evil in the nfl, especially in regards to racism, so yes I’m going to focus on football. It’s not just a concussion or physical safety issue.
Since this thread is about football and this is a discussion board, this is absolutely the place for such a discussion. If you want to talk about other sports then CEP is a great spot to post an article and have a discussion, that would certainly be welcomed.

Oh I actually did NOT know that lol
But it feels a little "all lives matter" to be "but soccer concussions!" when this specific incident happened in a football game.

But this thread is about an NFL football player who was injured playing an NFL football game so…of course the discussion involves the NFL?
Other than boxing I don’t know any other sport that causes such traumatic brian injuries.
Feels kinda “all lives matter.”
ETA: Did not finish reading responses before replying. Did not intend to pile on. Apologies.
Well that's wonderful. I had heard his eyes were open and he was conscious. This update is even more positive.
I just watched the press conference with 2 doctors on his medical team and it all sounds like the best news possible at this moment. He's still semi sedated, in order to keep him comfortable due to being on a ventilator, but when he was awake last night one of the first things he asked (via a notepad, he's unable to speak with the vent) who had won the game. The doctors told him he did, he won the game of life.

They also told him about his gofundme account and that "he would have a lot of toys to buy." 😭😭😭
There was definitely nothing dirty about it. I keep thinking of Tee. I didn't hear he was getting death threats. That is awful. Nobody did anything wrong; there is no need to blame anyone for anything. This whole incident is unfortunate and was very scary.
I was crying watching the whole thing. I am heartbroken for everyone involved.
Disagree with the bolded. The entire NFL industry is build upon putting these players in danger. Everyone who watches it and supports the NFL is complicit. I will never understand how these young men keep getting injured and with all the knowledge we have now on CTE that people keep supporting the NFL.
I get where you are coming from! I meant nobody did anything wrong as far as a dirty hit! Not the NFL or anything as a whole. Just this particular hit; nobody did anything wrong.

my immediate thought was "all sports matter!" so glad I am not alone.
Good to hear he is doing well. Hopefully his recovery is swift.
I did not know about him prior to this (don't follow sports) but he is from my metro area so I'm excited to see what good comes from his gofundme in the community.
My hot take is affiliation with and friends working in an organization doesn't mean that you can't see its flaws and discuss need for change. People say football is a religion. Well, look at the Catholic Church. Most Catholics I know can converse about both why they may identify as Catholic or even attend Mass but also can see the vast problems in the organization and are working for change. Many, many devoted Catholics have left the church altogether. Was that an easy choice for them? Often not, but the problems overcame that cultural pull.
My husband was raised with a legacy of football. His dad played for Harvard. He played for Columbia. He had concussion after concussion, his knees are shot and let's not get into the weight problems. He has no association with football now for those reasons and DS barely knows what it is but the point of the CEP thread is that is a *privilege*, white flight from a dangerous sport, and it's particularly blind in this case to not take not that this injured player is a Black man playing for the entertainment of a widely white audience who are all now "thoughts and prayers."

You’re being a bit disingenuous here.
Football is the most popular sport in the country so it makes sense that it’s receiving the most attention. It accounts for the highest number of injuries. There also might be something uniquely traumatic about constant hits to the head, as autopsies of former players have shown.
So, yes, you could get injured doing just about any sport, but when you add in billions of dollars in revenue, a long history of racism, salaries that haven’t kept pace with other leagues, and the NFL as the only major league to lack guaranteed contracts — then yeah, you’re going to get outsized scrutiny compared with other sports.
Also, I am THRILLED to hear the latest update, as is everyone here. I’d argue that now is the perfect time to have these conversations.

This actually made me cry actual tears. I cannot believe he is moving and coherent. That is amazing.
"Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies-"God damn it, you've got to be kind.”
I am so glad he's awake and coherent. That's such a wonderful outcome of this awful ordeal.
I think football is a uniquely dangerous sport that needs a lot of examination on how it can be made safer and more equitable from a race perspective (such as ensuring there are enough good educational opportunities for Black boys that aren't tied to athletic performance). I do feel like it's worth acknowledging that this particular injury, though, is rare in football and is actually more common in other sports and situations. So this is an important ongoing conversation, but I don't think this particular incident is going to best illustrate what changes need to be made to football- I don't think this could have been prevented outside of prohibiting any kind of contact in any sport. I am personally far more concerned (now that we know Hamlin is going to be ok) about the player who suffered multiple concussions in a row this year and was still sent back out to play (Tua?) as that sort of thing is a lot more common and likely to cause lasting damage for more players. It also worries me a lot how many players are just patched up and sent back out to play without having recovered from injuries and what that does to their bodies long term.

A man's life was in question and you're worried about the massively income generating NFL? The entire system is at fault.
There was a kid paralyzed on my high school field. Opposing team. They were far superior, and he had a real chance at a college scholarship.
The entire community rallied and raised a shitton to pay for college, treatment, accessibility. But that won't get him walking again. We were the wealthier school, more than half white and with some deep parental pockets. Even then it didn't escape my notice he came from a 90% black school, failed under pre bush rules. And everyone patted themselves on the back for helping this victim of a freak accident (it was a clean hit) rather than examining why we pay to watch men and boys destroy themselves.
It's barbaric.
So yeah. Fuck the NFl.
For hashtag not all, my partner who played football, lacrosse in high school, and was a collegiate cheerleader, he said cheerleading gave him more (diagnosed) concussions and would never allow a child of his to do that.
No one can know which sport led to life long brain issues that led to serious career implications, but without sport would there be cheerleading? Without promise of college would there be kids risking their lives on the field?
Fuck fifa fuck NFL. I'll watch sailing for fun (don't ruin this please)

I read an article that he did the first drive his senior year at Pitt, i knew nothing about him before this and seeing on the local news that he was from the area.
Amazing update! I was intubated at this time 12 years ago and his story makes me so emotional. Waking up and realizing I was intubated was the most traumatizing experience of my life. I am so glad he is making such strides in his recovery.
