Literally down to 8 or 9pm on NYE but I met my goal of 30 books! Hope to be as productive in 2023.
Finished: The Perfect Marriage by Jeneva Rose - 3.5 - 4*'s it was really good for a free Kindle book Someday, Maybe by Onyi Nwabineli* - 3.5 - 4*'s so good, but so heavy (TW suicide) Husbands and Other Sharp Objects by Marilyn Simon Rothstein 3*'s - typical Kindle free book. A lot of body issues, and read more like a mom (of grown children) blog rather than a fictional novel.
Read: Things We Do In the Dark 3*'s - ugh, I went in with high hopes, but the second half really fizzled. Also very dark and graphic (TW dying in a fire, child abuse, graphic depiction of murder)
I only finished 4 books in December, which is low considering I was off for the last week of the year. They were all hard to rate on Goodreads, I ended up rounding up or down based on the overall rating.
3.5 Stars: Oona Out of Order by Margarita Montimore Shrines of Gaiety by Kate Atkinson
4.5 Stars: Nettle and Bone by T. Kingfisher Near the Bone by Christina Henry
I finished the year at 80/75 books. My original goal was 52 but I increased it a few times.
I read 22 books in 2022. I guess I should make 23 my goal for this year. I don't really set goals for reading. I already feel enough pressure from the library when I borrow an e-book. Seven days isn't long enough! In December I read: The Hate U Give - yes, I'm late to the party on that one. 4* One Shot (Jack Reacher) - 4* My Grandmother Asked Me to Tell You She's Sorry - 5*
I ended up at 307 for the year! I’m really not sure how, I don’t feel like I read more time-wise than in recent years but that’s around 40-50 more books. 🤷🏻♀️
The Last Party by Clare Mackintosh (solid)
A Heart That Works by Rob Delaney (sad but good)
Reputation by Sarah Vaughan (this was unexpectedly a legal drama)
Vanishing Fleece: Adventures in American Wool by Clara Parkes (this is an odd woman)
Runaway: Notes on the Myths That Made Me by Erin Keane (ok)
My Favorite Recipe: A Collection of Favorite Recipes by Marylanders by Helen Henry, food editor: The Evening Sun (super cute essays)
Guess who Died?: Memories of Baltimore with Recipes by Mindell Dubansky (it seems like she got a grant to write this. Why? It was so bad)
The Three of Us by Ore Agbaje-Williams (I liked it but I think some people are going to hate it)
Romantic Comedy by Curtis Sittenfeld (fun!)
She Is a Haunting by Trang Thanh Tran (messy)
The Widowmaker by Hannah Morrissey (disappointing and grim)
The Ingenue by Rachel Kapelke-Dale (strange pacing)
Games and Rituals by Katherine Heiny (I wish it was a novel)
Best of Friends by Kamila Shamsie (I didn’t enjoy the second half)
Hidden in Snow: The Åre Murders #1 by Viveca Sten (disappointing)
The Woods by Vanessa Savage (disappointing)
The Woman in the Dark by Vanessa Savage (disappointing)
Recipe for Disaster: 40 Superstar Stories of Sustenance and Survival edited by Alison Riley (bad)
The Skeleton Key by Erin Kelly (fun!)
Do Not Disturb by Claire Douglas (ok.)
Mon mari by Maud Ventura (so much fun and an actual twist!)
The Drowning Woman by Robyn Harding (bad)
The Ugly History of Beautiful Things: Essays on Desire and Consumption by Katy Kelleher (disappointing)
The Family Plot by Megan Collins (bad)
Oona Out of Order by Margarita Montimore (disappointing)
Holiday Romance by Catherine Walsh 3.5* One Last Gift by Emily Stone 3.5* Twice in a Lifetime by Melissa Baron 3* Meet Me Under the Mistletoe by Jenny Bayliss 3* Here for the Drama by Kate Bromley 3* Yesterday's Fingerprints by Siena Sloane 3*
Barron's Second Chance by ST Moors 2.5* Forget Me Twice by Carina Taylor 2* Never Forget You by Fiona Lucas 2* Before I Do by Sophie Cousens 2* Merry Ex-Mas by Courtney Walsh 2* Leo by Mia Sheridan 2* Leo's Chance by Mia Sherida 2*
I finished the year with 66 of my goal of 65 with an audio book finish on NYE. It was a strong month as well.
Visual: Killers of a Certain Age 5* (fun fast paced read) The Calculating Stars 4* A Spindle Splintered 3*
Audio: The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches 5* (sweet spot of good characters, setting and practical magic) Tomorrow, tomorrow and Tomorrow 4* A Ladder to the Sky 4*
