This week I finished Don't Believe It by Charlie Donlea. I gave it two stars because it really irritated me how much certain things didn't make sense and just didn't flow well together.
I'm currently reading the first "secret project" by Brandon Sanderson (as part of his kickstarter) and it's called Tress of the Emerald Sea and so far I have really enjoyed it. It's a lot funnier than I was expecting (which, to be fair, I wasn't expecting it to be funny in the first place).
QOTW: I set my reading goal to be 75 books for the year but in general I have a goal to read more non-fiction books. I only read 8 last year and 16 in 2021, so I am hoping to exceed both of those numbers.
I just started Knife Creek by Paul Doiron — needed something that wouldn’t require serious attention. I was trying an ARC of The Terraformers by Annalee Newitz, but I can’t get into it at all. I’ll try it again sometime.
QOTW: I set my goal at 100, but most likely I’ll go over that. I don’t have any real goals other than to read stuff I like.
I'm about halfway through The Marriage Portrait. It's very good but I take issue with the historical note at the beginning of the book. It states that in reality the protagonist died within a year of marriage. So now I know that either she dies or there's some convoluted surprise. Obviously it's history so hardly a spoiler but I would have rather gone in without this.
QOTW: I set mine at 52 books or 1 per week. I had to up it last year but that's including Kindle Shorts.
Read: Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow (5 stars) Reading: The Light We Carry. It’s good but it’s going to be a slow read for me. Up next: The Dead Zone by Stephen King. Just came in from the library.
QOTW: my goal this year is to not a have a number goal. I want to quit books that I don’t like faster so that I’m left with a quality reading experience this year. I slug through so many books to reach my goal and I dont want to do it this year.

Finished Hell of a Book, which I really didn't enjoy. I read it for bookclub and everyone is tripping over themselves to praise it, so I'm obviously in the minority.
Finished Poison for Breakfast which was incredible.
Reading The Gender Games by Juno Dawson, which I'm really enjoying. It's about her transition, but also the ways in which gender controls so much of society.
Listening to The Devil's Half Acre which I really like. I'm early in, but I like that although it's about Mary Lumpkin, the author is also exploring the untold stories of enslaved women.
QOTW: Do you have a new reading goal for 2023 (doesn't have to be a certain number of books read)? If so, what is the goal? I want to read more nonfiction. With that goal in mind, I'm trying to do mostly nonfiction this month (the only fiction was for the aforementioned bookclub and a roadtrip with my kids). I also want to read more of the books I already own (and haven't read) instead of getting new books from the library.
Lavender House by Lev AC Rosen. It's was a super quick fun mystery. 4*
Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver. I love her writing. Her stories stick with me. I forgot books A LOT (like we're a week into January and I forgot I had read Lavender House already ha) but I still think about her other book I've read and will probably be thinking of this one for awhile too! Anyways 5*
A Year of Magical Thinking by Joan Didion. It was ok, I think I might not be a memoir person? I also did this one on audiobook so maybe it was more impactful being read. 3*
DNF Lucy By The Sea. It's about a women going through the pandemic and omg I hated it. The long scenes of packing up gloves and masks and making sure to use a glove at the gas pump because no one is sure how it is spread. Blahhhh. This was on a ton of lists so I'm obviously in the minority lol but I don't think I'll be able to do any sort of pandemic entertainment for a long time.
Currently listening to Stolen Focus and really like it so far. It's nonfiction about how our phones/screens are breaking our focus and I assume by the end ways to fix it? I'm about 25% through.
QOTW: I don't really have any specific goals. Maybe just to track my books? I typically don't track anything, but I read a lot (for me) last year and then was a little sad I didn't have any way to really remember.
I'm slogging through Nora Goes Off Script. No clue how this made any best of lists. It's very "middle aged woman will always ruin life for a man" theming. Reminded me of Finley Donovan. Why do we write women this way?
I set my goal the same as last year - 36, 3 per month. I didn't hit it last year because I got into a few ruts but hopefully I can do it this year!
I just finished. I’d love to hear your thoughts.
I finally finished! I thought it was really good. Still going back and forth on my exact rating. There's a few things that bothered me a bit about the story but nothing major. I really loved what Sam did with the game at the end, with all the little details.
