I’m in LA and we didn’t get near what the Bay Area got. The Capitola footage is heartbreaking. When I lived up there we went to Zelda’s so often when we’d go to that side of the hill and it’s just destroyed. I know a friend who teaches in Palo Alto area had a day of classes cancelled this week.
Here in LA, there were signs asking people to avoid traveling unless necessary. DS usually goes to his dad’s on Wednesday nights but his dad wasn’t home this week and I was so glad he didn’t have to drive there. It’s a half hour away and part of that freeway was closed Thursday morning.
I live about a mile from the beach. You can see the ocean from some of the roads I drive to get around town. The waves are crashing above the break wall and into the Harbor still today. And they’ve kept a few Piera closed for safety.
The LA River has parts that often are dry and there is lots of rushing water like I’ve not seen since like the late 80s. It’s wild. We need the rain for sure, but I worry about the people in flood zones and near burn scars.
I’m in the north Bay Area. We lost power for about 24 hours from the high winds. Lots of smaller downed branches around our house and in the roads. It didn’t feel like a crazy amount of rain, but I think the rain continuing for the whole next week after two recent big storms is bringing some flooding concerns. A few streets were closed in town due to flooding.
I’m from Santa Barbara and my friends there say it’s ok - just lots of trees down. They did mandatory evacuations in Montecito (the burn scar areas) the other night but luckily it turned out ok and no mudslides.
My friend in Walnut Creek has had long power outages and lots of flooding/mud around her neighborhood (luckily not her house so far)
The previous storms brought more rain but this storm brought more wind and downed trees - between the wind and saturated soil. We’ve been lucky but a local preschool was destroyed by a falling tree (luckily nay night so no one was injured. I’m expecting g more trees down with the continued saturated soil. Our reservoirs are still below last year this time but I hope that changes as runoff accumulates.

The wind has been fierce. My Spooky dog has no problem going to pee in the rain but the wind gave him bad nerves.
Several down trees and power outages for town.
A few of my work properties have been flooded and had structures destroyed by the elements. It’s made it a very tough week. I am happy it’s Friday and there was a little lull before it picks back up tomorrow.
We are in northern Ca, Sacramento area. The worst of the storm has been wind and road flooding. A lot of the more rural and/or older areas are without power because of downed lines. All of the suburban areas developed in the past 30ish years or so have underground power, so we’ve been mostly lucky to stay on. But lots of flooded roads, or blocked by downed trees or mud slides. The erosion is especially hard on all of the areas with recent fires. I’ve seen a lot of damage to houses and fences, from wind and downed trees, but nothing serious to anyone I know yet.
My husband is a floodplain management engineer, so things aren’t great there. We’ve actually been out of town for most of the storm but I imagine he’ll be on night duty at the emergency center once we get back.
I am just a little south of Capitola and it’s been relentless. The latest storm brought a lot more wind than rain for us. We have a large ocean facing window that was flexing with the gusts of wind so we had to brace them. One of my kids school had some flooding and more excepted with another storm coming Monday. Local beach parking lot is now covered in about 4 feet of sand so the storm surge and waves has massively moved tons of sand. We had a nice cool sunny day yesterday but the clouds are rolling now and it’s getting dark and gray. Rain expected shortly with a break tomorrow and then another big storm Monday. Highway one closed south of us which will be cutting off many people. It’s open for a short time today to allow people to get supplies or evacuate for the next storm.

We’re fine in the Bay Area. We live on a hill so we’re not particularly worried about flooding.
Still, it’s been more relentless rain than I can recall in my entire time living here (7+ years.) I can’t believe that by the time it’s over, it’ll be over a month where we’ve had pretty legit rain almost every single day.
Our worst storm was the New Year’s Eve one, when a portion of the freeway was shut down. The coastal and burn-scarred areas have been getting it particularly bad though.
Redondo and Hermosa Beach had serious waves and storm surge. If you click past the surfer photos in this article you can see 30+-foot waves crashing over the King Harbor breakwater and associated damage.

This is my beach. You can see the beach where we got married in the back of some of the shots. In South Redondo, the water came so far up, sand is now all over the walk path. Some of the lifeguard towers have been damaged. And just south of that at Torrance Beach there is erosion. Just north of Hermosa in Manhattan Beach there is so much trash on the beach - piles - that all got washed up and pushed around when the big waves came in. I’ve live here majority of my life and I think the last time we’ve seen this I was in middle school.
formerlyak , is that the beach right by the Chart House? We see sunset weddings there all the time driving by to the sailing club that’s in some of the photos (damaged parking lot and docks ripped out). Thankfully it doesn’t sound like there were any injuries?
ETA glad to hear there were indeed no injuries (especially with all the surfers).
My best friend is in Danville, and while the rain hasn't been as bad as other areas in the Bay Area, they've been without power more than they've been with power.
Where I live it really hasn't been bad, thankfully. We also had the signage on the roads telling us not to travel if we could avoid it. The beach areas flooded and there was sand covering the boardwalk, but they worked quickly to clean it up. We'll see how it goes with these next two storms that are coming in. I expect there will be more flooding and that we'll see trees falling.
I live on a hill and have a new roof, so I'm in good shape.
I work in Daly City, just south of San Francisco. They closed all city offices abruptly on Wednesday through Thursday, to help keep the roads clear for emergency vehicles. I work in a library and the hardest part was closing our doors to a homeless man who was hoping to find somewhere safe and dry to weather the storm. While the rest of us were getting ready to close, one of my fantastic co-workers was doing her darndest to help him find a place to go. (I honestly don't know the outcome). :/
Daly City has also had a lot of power outages that have lasted a long time. When we reopened on Friday, several people came in to charge their devices, and that continued into Saturday. And yesterday morning I heard from a Daly City friend who had lost power the night before.
In San Francisco, the wind was nothing like I've ever felt. Lots of downed trees. Last night there was lots of high wind and heavy rain, so I'm not sure what today is going to look like once it gets light. I worry for our unhoused community.
As a side note, against court orders San Francisco is apparently continuing their street sweeps against homeless people.
My teen and a friend got up to golf at 5 am because they could see the storms were coming and wanted to get a round in. I mean, I’ve been asking him to learn to plan ahead. But at the same time, he’s nuts!
@@@
We had a little rain at like 4 am, but it stopped. The storm is just north of us. It will be here by lunchtime I think. The harbor is still pretty messed up and some of the boards on the parts you walk on between boats (clearly I don’t boat) are barely hanging on. Same with the structure of the lifeguard stands at some of the beaches. I think we will see more damage with this round.
There were surprisingly few boats washed up along the shore this week. Big storms usually knock anchor out boats off their moorings and they get blown around the bay until they hit rocks somewhere. Often right along the shore we pass driving in the mornings.
I’m about an hour east of San Francisco. We have had flooding and lots of trees down. At my house, we have a pop up canopy in the backyard that got destroyed.
My worksite is a different story, it’s a mess. Lots of roof leaks, flooding, trees falling. They did ask people to work from home if they could last week.
I guess Santa Barbara county is getting slammed right now. They have evacuated almost all of Montecito (again), closed all schools (in Santa Barbara at least) early, and there are a bunch of shelter in place orders. My friend’s mom in carpenteria was just evacuated due to the rising Toro Creek. The videos if the creeks there are crazy - so much rain. Luckily I haven’t heard of any major damage or mudslides yet. Definitely a lot of beach erosion.

My bff works at the SB court and they basically closed and sent everyone home. They are working on finding places for people to go who commute in for work and can’t get home. Parts of the 101 are affected.
I’m in central CA, so it’s been raining here steadily but not a heavy downpour.

apparently the 101 is closed from carpenteria to Cabrillo downtown 😬 my friends parents couldn’t get out but luckily found a hotel room
Our family has a vacation home on the beach in Ventura. I am a little worried about how it will do. I just checked the driveway camera and it appears to be ok for now.

They just issued a tornado watch for metro so cal zones. It is working its way down the coast and I know San Luis Obispo County is under a flash flood watch and a 5 year old is missing after being swept away from a vehicle in a flooded creek bed. I'm down in OC and it is supposed to start heavily around 8 p.m..

Do you have a link to the tornado watch? Just wondering if I need to prep the kids for what we do if a tornado is coming our way. I think my office closet is our best bet.
I haven't seen any tornado watch here yet, just that thunderstorms are predicted to start around 3am, plus high surf and small craft advisories. I'll be working tomorrow and often have to be out in the field for work. Lucky I have a big, warm rain jacket and my work uniform is at least water resistant. We'll see how it goes.

I’m in the east bay as well, about 30m north of 1confused1 … lots of rain and some road flooding w creeks and canals nearly cresting. In Marin where J is, there’s been more intense rain, wind, road flooding with some power outages.
