Velar Fricative, yeah, it's an interesting mix of very liberal, very hippy, very right wing, rural/city folk, etc. I think the mix of people, the surrounding area and how everyone is dealing with each other makes it unique. This is just coming from visiting a bunch of times, not from living there (which is always different).
I lived in NM for a decade, went to grad school at UNM. It is one of my favorite places, and we talk about retiring there.
Albuquerque's population, while extremely varied in all the ways, is still quite segregated. The state does trend blue, but there is plenty of right-wing/libertarian/wild west nuttery. This article doesn't surprise me one bit, sadly.

We had that, too. One of my friends in high school… his dad was a nuclear engineer working there (and in the one that convinced me not to pursue that as a major). His mom was one of the hippies who would protest the SST (super safe transport) convoys. Of course “who knows” what was in the SSTs (it was bombs, our town made bombs).
One of my dad’s friends was the guy that, when you meet him, seemed all good ol boy, country. But guy was super smart, did something high level, travel to the international atomic energy commission, met his 4th ex-wife in Europe.
And then, we knew a guy who was an SST driver. Crazy guy who I wouldn’t be surprised to find his name on Jan 6th lists.
sorry for the tangent to left field. But, it was a really weird place to grown up. And, I feel like that who mix of everything together is probably likely in other places like that. Oak Ridge, Alberqueque, Huntsville, etc.
I can attest to the weirdness in the state. Most of my paternal family is there. My family hails from the southwest portion of copper mines, Billy The Kid folklore, Native American reverence (mixed with prejudice), and a deep-seeded suspicion of government and authority in general. So libertarianism thrives, blue dog democrats used to thrive but have since converted to Republicans, 2nd amendment rights supersede all, and hippie artists make their stained glass, turquoise, beaded, woven, painted treasures amidst wanna be outlaws.
I live in Rio Rancho, which is basically west Albuquerque. I'm not surprised by this at all. As mentioned above, we have a weird blend of people here - hippies, liberals and then super conservative/right wing nut jobs. My friend is very close to our Secretary of State, and the stuff she went through while trying to certify the vote during the Biden election was terrifying.
