I even asked him this morning, "You're doing picture frame molding, right, not board and batten?" and he was like, "Yeah, just like your picture." But, my picture is like an optical illusion -- it was meant to show the spacing of the picture frame molding like this:
But it was just a quick sketch for my own reference, to make sure two squares didn't look squished on that size of wall. I shared it with the contractor but thought he'd be talking with me beforehand. ETA: I see now I even wrote "picture frame molding" in my drawing so that makes it even more his fault, but I guess he was looking at it on his phone so it's really small.
So now they are putting a frame-style molding INSIDE the board-and-batten squares. I guess I can live with it but I really don't like it. It is really heavy as opposed to the light appearance of picture frame molding, which is what I liked about it. Ugh.
FWIW, I think the contractor's approach is a more architectural "expensive" look. Can you PIP? Is it worth pushing back?
Yeah, unfortunately the picture frame molding would have been MUCH easier. But, at this point I'm waiting to see how it turns out -- aside from the check-in first thing in the morning I was in meetings all morning so it was all up by the time I saw it and probably too late to pivot further unless I make them fully rip it all out and probably even redo the drywall.
I think I can live with it, but the overall impact is pretty much the opposite of what I wanted -- really heavy instead of really light and delicate. :-( Not an objectively bad look, just not the one I wanted. Definitely better with the inside molding than it was when it was just board-and-batten, which is a look I actually dislike. I'll take a picture as soon as the workman leaves.

ETA: Here it is (unpainted, of course). I think it'll be fine, especially once it's painted and all the hardware etc. is in. It's just hard to get rid of my mental picture that I've had for the two years of waiting and replace it with something new!
I love that floor tile - it will look gorgeous once painted. And dare I say even better than the lighter look? I think it goes nicely w/the molding around the window, which is also quite substantial.
I also think it actually looks really nice. I know it's hard to get the original idea out of your head, but if at least four internet friends say it looks good it must be true
I agree that board and batten isn't a style I personally love, but I do like the thicker moulding with the detailed trim. It looks really good with the window!
I think the trim looks really nice... However, the window being off-center would keep me up at night. I wouldn't notice/care if it was a plain wall or even half-tiled. But the framed trim really draws my attention to it.

Thanks? 😂
I'm sorry! Usually the good part about the internet is I write things like this and then abandon the thought without sharing it. My filter failed this morning.

I like the contractor’s installation and once it’s all filled you will have less ledges to dust as compared to the picture frame moulding. Upsides right? I don’t know why but I find dusting washrooms to be the worst.

Ha, no, it's fine. I actually didn't know the window was off-center before I started this, but I definitely know now. I think it might look a little less noticeable once the pedestal sink and toilet are weighing that left side down, but ... at this point it is what it is. :-D

Yes - it will look totally fine once the sink and toilet are back in. I actually went and looked back at your other powder room thread with the before pics and it looks absolutely fine (and I think it would actually look weird if the window were centred on the wall because then it would be like halfway over the toilet).
