Speaking of washers and dryers, I want to get a new washer/dryer set and a new fridge. What's the best place for big purchases like that?
My instinct is to go to a place that has a brick-and-mortar store, but I wonder if you end up dealing with everything online anyway, and I'm still mad at Home Depot for my outdoor furniture that was delayed like six months with no explanation. Lowes doesn't seem to have much in the way of LG washers and dryers.
AJ Madison seems to offer a lot -- any experiences, good or bad? Other suggestions?
We use a local appliance place that's not mom & pop but also not big box. They have three large showrooms and are big enough to have their own service technicians and carry tons of brands. I'd look for something local that can provide service if needed.
I’ve been asking around in preparation for replacing some kitchen appliances soon. (No first hand experience yet, just reporting feedback from others.) Costco has a good reputation and will come back and assist if there are problems with the appliance. The consensus is that Home Depot has the worst service.

Same. In my area Bray & Scarff is the kind of in between a one-off place and HD/Lowes. Good customer service IME (like you can actually talk to a person), wide selection across brands and price points.

We also use a local ace with like 5-10 stores in the area. Warner Stellian for the upper Midwest people.
Or Costco. If Costco has something that works I just get it there.
3ish years ago every appliance in our house died in quick succession. At first I went and looked in person and did a ton of research, and by the end I was like "fuck it", and bought whatever consumer reports said was the most reliable, and could ship fairly quickly from Costco or the local place. This approach has served me well lolol.
We’ve used both a local appliance store and Costco. The process with Costco is 100% easier, they double the manufacturer warranty, and when a contractor error lead to a damaged dishwasher (not at all Costco’s fault) they replaced it for free anyways. I can’t say enough good things about them if they carry the product you want.
We’ve gone to the local store for appliances when we had specific needs (product or timeline), and it’s much more of a sales type scenario (upsell, negotiations, etc), which I just don’t enjoy.

Wow, thanks everyone, I never thought of Costco. Can you add installation and haul-away? I have to join to try to find out more but they definitely have a washer/dryer set I would want (LG front loader side-by-side is all I'm looking for)

We just had our new washer from Costco delivered a couple days ago, and yes, they did both installation and haul away.
We also had a bad experience with Home Depot in how they handled our flooring. A 17 year old house does not need to do an asbestos test before getting new flooring installed (by them)! It was such a fucking racket.

We bought our kitchen appliances and washer from a local chain. We appreciated their knowledge of the appliances, and that they have their own service department. We ended up having my mom’s fridge repaired by them this summer. They were quick to respond and more than willing to do the work (which they continued to do until the problem was solved) , even though it wasn’t bought from their store.

I bought our LG washer and dryer from Costco and it was a fine experience. (Hard to classify a washer dryer purchase as great) They did both installation and haul-away.
I used to use them for all of our appliances, because they have a good extended warranty, but I was disappointed with the overall warranty experience on our dishwasher.

We always use a local store, and have never regretted it. We get excellent service. We’ve done a stove, a microwave and our washer and dryer with them.

With Costco if you don't have a membership I think you can ask for a day pass and you only have to get a membership if you buy something. The store by us has the appliances at the exit - so you can walk in the customer service door and check them out w/o having a card.
Our contractor really loves AJMadison and recommended them to us for quite a few items. I never purchased from them as I wanted to see in person - but they have a good reputation from what I've heard.
My last appliance purchase was from Best Buy of all places. I looked in person at all the big box stores, but they ended up having the fastest delivery when my washer died at the beginning of a long holiday weekend in 2020. Price was comparable and they installed and hauled away the old one.
