I think I want to get a new dinnerware set. I'm trying to downsize all of the things, which sounds counterintuitive to getting something new, but hear me out...
Day to day we use white Corelle dishware. We have maybe 6 dinner plates, 6 salad plates, maybe 4 bowls... plus I have some additional somewhat matching IKEA mini plates and mini bowls (got after I had weight loss surgery).
We also have the everyday dinnerware we got when we got married in 2007--Calvin Klein Khaki collection. We have I think 10 dinner plates, 10 bowls, 10 smaller/salad plates, 4 'rice bowls,' 8 mugs (a few broke at the handle), and we have some of the 'entertaining' stuff from this set--a lasagna pan, large serving bowl, salt and pepper shaker, etc. etc. (It's this set, for reference: www.replacements.com/china-calvin-klein-cargo-cream/c/208601). I love the look of the stuff still, but it's HEAVY and we have so much of it and only use it maybe 2x/year -- actually even less since my SIL took over Thanksgiving hosting (bless her!).
So what I'd like is something that's kind of middle ground... mostly just good for everyday use. Holds up well in the dishwasher, can be microwaved, etc. (Also relatively sturdy because our boys are almost 8 and 4.5, and we tend to use less kid plates for them these days.) I'm thinking probably white and maybe something from William Sonoma or Crate and Barrel? I don't want to spend a fortune, but I want something that will last. We tend toward more modern style, but I really just want clean and timeliness. I'm 40 and these are the last dishes I plan to buy!
Has anyone bought anything recently and have recommendations? I feel like most of my friends haven't updated this stuff since they got married 15+ years ago.
Within the last couple of years we got rid of our old Pfalzgraff stoneware and I got an all white Lenox bone china pattern, Tin Can Alley. It comes in a 4 degree and 7 degree version, we have the 4 degree. MH has broken a couple of the fruit bowls, which I need to replace, but on the whole I've been really happy with it. Pretty strong, relatively light weight, goes with anything. My 3 and 7 year olds eat off them.
Our everyday dishes are the Aspen white from Crate & Barrel. We also have the Open Kitchen snack plates and dip bowls from Williams Sonoma for smaller snacks and they match perfectly. I love them. Obviously heavier than correlle but you get used to it. We also have Lenox china that we got for our wedding but with young kids we just dress our regular dishes up for holidays.

It wasn't in your list of considerations, but just FYI we have the IKEA Uplagga dinnerware and it definitely chips too much. We are on the verge of replacing it all as well so following this thread!
So have you looked at fiestaware? I had a multi-color set years ago and it held up so well - like zero chips. My kids were also young then too. I wanted white dishes so I switched to a basic set from amazon but the bowls have chipped so badly.

I feel like the Fiestaware I have in my mind is kind of a thick plate and I feel like I would like something a bit less bulky. But I do hear their stuff holds up well and lasts forever.
We have been happy with Aspen Rimmed (just white) from Crate and Barrel. Microwave, dishwasher, 3 kids and going strong. We have lost a few to the tile floor, but they are affordable to replace.
We got kate spade dishes when we were married (not fine China, but they’re “elevated” looking every day dishes). They’ve held up great. Almost 20y and zero chips. No broken handles, etc. I don’t know what they’re priced like now but would definitely recommend the brand if they’ve kept up the quality.
We have Corelle Swept for everyday and I love it. Plain white but with a wave-pattern-ish border.
Used to use Fiesta but I feel like Fiesta is too heavy and clunky now with the kids for everyday. The Corelle stacks a lot flatter in the cabinet and is easier to manage in and out of the dishwasher. I still have my Fiesta and we use some of the pieces a lot, like the little fruit dishes and the smaller plates. I put it in my china cabinet most of the year b/c it's colorful and fun.
I also have a white bone china set we got from Crate & Barrel for our wedding--very plain, but pretty white china. (ETA: it's "Anna", a retired style) We rarely use that, even though it's just white...we just use the Corelle for everyday and we don't really "entertain" the way I envisioned back when we registered.
If I were you, I'd probably just get some other Corelle and mix it in, or a couple fun sets. Cheap enough that you don't have to make it be "the last set ever", but great for this stage with kids.

How timely. I was looking online at dishes this weekend because we broke another bowl. The set is old and only available on replacements- a few pieces are much more than I paid for a whole set back in the day.
I was looking at Crate and Barrel Roulette in white. It seems to have lots of good reviews. Roulette

We have Corelle and like them. They’re easy to stack, durable, and can be abused (microwave, dishwasher etc). Our are white with black lines and pretty simple. We’ve had them 15ish years and they still look new. I actually got rid of my fancier dishes because the corelle were just easier.

We love our Crate and Barrel dishes and they holds up great in all manners of use. The bowls tend to chip - but honestly I think that's my DH/DSs rough handling and not loading them properly in the dishwasher as none of the others have chipped.
We did not buy pre-set dining sets as we didn't need/want mugs and wanted to be able to replace one offs vs. buying a full 4/5 piece set. We have the verge cereal bowls and the Aspen rimmed dinner/salad plates and pasta bowls.
I bought some white Ikea plates (don't remember the brand) quite a few yaers ago to fill in some gaps where we had broken dishes - they scratched very easily really quickly.
We have white everyday dishes from Crate and Barrel. I think they were called Great White? They don’t make that particular one anymore, but we bought our dishes about 22 years ago now and they are still going strong. Maybe one plate has chipped? We microwave/dishwasher/are hard on them. So, highly recommend Crate and Barrel

We literally just replaced our wedding Corelle set last week with a new set of Corelle. I had tried 2 other sets of dishes in between, but didn't like how heavy they were. Our old set is no longer made/can't find replacements at all and I wanted a few more and a slightly more plain style than I originally picked, so I went with Mystic Gray.

We have the Maison set in white from Crate & Barrel. We got them for our wedding so we've had them for almost 22 years. Some have chipped and we've replaced some, but overall they've held up very well. They're lightweight, microwave and dishwasher safe.

This is what we have! We got a whole new set about 2 years ago. We had C&B before, but they were white plates with a dark blue stripe. I REALLY wanted just plain white. Our old set lasted us since 2002 when we got married - so almost 20 years! I just got bored with them.
I love the new set and as they are all white with a slight design - we use them for both day to day and for nicer dinner parties (although I do have separate dishes for Thanksgiving and Xmas)
ETA: The Roulette also come with a blue stripe and DH was like "Oh! I like that!". I like it too, but NO! No blue! All white!!!!
I have the plain white Roulette from C&B and love them. It's been 12 years, and we've broken a bowl and chipped two plates, but I'm still very happy with them.

We had the roulette blue band for 18 years and they held up super well through two young kids.
I just got sick of them and donated last year, and got some pottery barn Quinn stoneware and I love these too.

It took me a year to find new dinnerware! I’d look at crate &barrel, pottery barn and Williams sonoma. I had to go in person and touch and feel them.
For me, I didn’t want white and wanted a more stoneware look. Anything that came close would then have the “wrong” bowl size or a mug I didn’t like. I ended up with the Kento line west elm, but it is really heavy so likely not what you’re looking for.
They've held their finish really well and still look brand new, 5+ years after getting them. I personally love the style and feel like they're perfect for every day. And I have thunked them HARD in some situations and they haven't broken (in others they have).
