Someone used to do this years ago and i always liked it lol..
W: shopped the circular and "only" spent 109 for the week.. W: Dh and Ds had an ice climbing trip.. they came back with money i had sent them with L: had to get daughter new cleats
Losses: It was technically like 10 days ago at this point, but we had to do about $1800 in maintenance on our car. I knew there were going to be some things that needed doing but I was hoping more in the $500-600 range vs 3x that. It's throwing off our budget for the month - we're going to have to pull at least a few hundred out of savings. There is a lot of padding in our budget so I rarely pull from it (though admittedly we have a line item for savings and often don't end up putting anything in it!) so it feels bad to do that!
Wins: I actually don't have a lot going on this month so unless something unexpected happens, our budget looks like we'll get caught up and should be able to put the money back into savings next month.
Win: This is silly but we had looked at getting a suet feeder for our backyard birds a couple of months ago, but whatever website we were on made it look like it was going to be at least $75 to get started. I randomly went into a small business bird store yesterday because I was in the same complex for something else, and bought a feeder and 4 suet cakes for only $38! Now we just need the birds to actually notice it.
W: My kid was sick all week, and I am sick now, so I haven’t been able to grocery shop. That puts off my $200 Costco trip for a few days, at least, and we’ve been eating down what we already have.
W: I’ve been looking for a desk for my oldest. I had my eye on one at target that was $119. I found someone on Facebook selling a new one for $35, and bought it.
W: I’ve been posting more stuff for sale on marketplace too. It feels silly to sell something for like $3-$5, but it doesn’t take much effort and when I sell a bunch in one weekend it really does add up.
L: not quite a loss yet, but it’s hanging over my head - a portion of our back fence went down during the storms last month. I think we’ll probably need to replace the whole thing, which is going to cost a fortune with lumber prices, labor, and super high demand for both. I’m hoping the neighbors will agree to just sit on it for a couple months to give the fencing prices time to hopefully calm down a bit.
W: At 8:30 Friday night there was no line for Costco gas, and I was able to get half a tank at $2.99 (cheap for here right now). L: From Saturday's shopping trip: I realized 2-2L sodas (BOGO) were expired, and the tomatoes I bought wound up being spoiled. I'll take all of them back to the supermarket in a few days. It was about $6. I'll be over there anyway. This means I don't have tomatoes for my salad tomorrow at lunch. L: Not really a loss, but I'd spent $60 when I went to Costco--but on stuff I'd had on my list.
Major W: we are doing a bathroom reno soon. I found a $600 vanity for $50. Perfect size and style, new condition, just a discontinued floor model. I budgeted $2800 for fixtures and we're close to $1800. Feeling really good about that saved $1000.
L: I tried to wash our bed pillows and forgot to choose "no spin" so our front load washer broke. It was 15+ years old but we had to buy a new one. W: I was able to find an "excellent condition" one from our local Best Buy Outlet, so saved $700+ off the retail price. W: We took the broken washer to the scrap metal place and made $20 instead of paying someone to haul it or paying for dump fees.
(Can you tell I am trying to really spin my stupid mistake into a win, lol?!?!)
W: Groceries were $150 for the next 7-10 days, and that includes some bulk buying of salmon.
On Saturday I was grabbing something at the store for my Dad ($13) and on the way back to my car, I tripped and fell. $80 for urgent care and I have a sprained wrist.
We had negative temps here over the weekend, so I had to crank the heat- $$$$
I have two cats who cost $$$- I got a nice deal on Chewy; I got a $20 egiftcard for a future purchase after I made a $40 purchase the other day. I always need food, treats or litter for them so the $20 will come in handy for sure.
Win - my H had a work event in a city 2 hours away on Saturday so the kids and I tagged along and got an overnight out of it for free. We went to a college basketball game, sat in a suite, ate snacks, and kids swam at the hotel pool with free breakfast all for zero dollars. It was a fun night away!
Loss - My car needs some maintenance that will be a few hundred dollars this week. Boooooo.
I’ve had the most volatile I think I’ve ever experienced in a week.
W: Got a glowing annual review with a 5% raise and will get 145% of my 17% bonus (which was based off my promotion salary from September which is awesome).
L: DH lost his job without warning.
Too bad they don’t even out, but the bonus will definitely help!
W: I'm in the office this week for 4 days and all lunches are paid for, along with 2 dinners (woot!)
L: Check engine light came on in my SUV and I had to have it towed to the repair shop (so a W for finally using the AAA I've been paying for for years and never needing). I was hoping it would be more to fix it then it's worth and I could finally look at a new car, but it was only $1500 so I'm stuck with it (so an L and a W for not having to get a new car, I guess)
W: My 5% raise hits my paycheck this week! I'm excited to revamp the budget spreadsheet and funnel more into savings. W/L: I paid off my credit card. It was only $1500 but it feels so good to have it gone! So a win that my only debt besides the mortgage is gone, but a loss that I took the money from savings to get rid of it. L: I had to register my car this month. I always forget about that and the $400 bill surprises me out of no where.
W: ds had a bday at a place that was like $100 cheaper than other party places. So minor win. Doing well meal planning and not eating out.
L: I keep putting off our taxes but that bill comes due soon. I went shopping while dd was at swim. I tried to keep it to ‘love it’ buys but still dropped a nonessential $100. Also swimming pool dues came due, another fun $500+ bill.

simpsongal, yeah, I did some nonessential shopping last weekend too and bought a new dress (that I didn't really need) that I loved, for $120. I actually left the store, went home to do a few things, and couldn't stop thinking about it, so then I went back and bought it.
W: Found out that the non-refundable $900 deposit I paid for a weekend trip we were supposed to go on tomorrow but had to cancel will be held for a year so we can reschedule.

maybe we’re at a win then? If you find something you love, pounce! Much better than ordering a bunch of meh stuff and taking some of it back or keeping a piece out of desperation/obligation (pretty sure that was shopping in most of my 30s).

W: I finally created a budget in excel that actually works the way my brain works. I have tried all sorts of other systems and kept coming back to excel but kept failing at it because I never sat down and made it work right. I had a lightbulb moment of another tweak I could make this morning - I made it and I'm so proud. Lol.
W: I was able to barter photography for an extracurricular for my kid. I think we are all happy with the arrangement. I had told her no on this one before because we had already said yes to a different one. Now she can do both.
Major W: My union ratified a new contract! It's the best deal we've gotten in 20+ years. I will get an initial 4% raise with backpay to July 2022, another 6% raise this coming July, and another 4% in 2024. There are a smattering of other benefits that will be financially beneficial as well.
I'd still really like a career change in the next few years, but the pay increase makes the bad parts of my job a little more palatable.

W: I finally moved a significant amount of money that I had been sitting on in a savings account into some higher earning accounts.
L: It's looking like we are not going to get any bonus at work this year. We'll find out for sure next month but I'm already annoyed since it would usually be 8-10% of my salary.
