This is absolutely devastating.
Reminder to everyone to donate $$, not stuff and to avoid earmarking your donations for this specific disaster. Better to donate unrestricted $ to enable the org to spend as needed.

Holy shit. Istanbul (and beyond) just got hit with a pretty big snowstorm, so they'd already already cancelled hundreds of flights. This cannot be good for rescue efforts. They're not particularly good about snow removal. I was there during last year's 30 year storm, and taxis would just tell me to get out and walk because they couldn't get through roads.

Death toll tops 5000.
I spent a lot of time in a city that's on the edge of the affected zone and have friends there with their families, with whom I've stayed. AFAIK everyone is ok. I think only 1 large apt building collapsed which is of course devastating, but at least it spared their incredible mosque.
"Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies-"God damn it, you've got to be kind.”

This level of devastation is just incomprehensible. My friend’s h is on a fema response team and is on alert to go there: He has worked two major catastrophic events the last two years and I think this might do in his mental sanity.

Ugh so horrible. I was just talking to a friend from Haiti, so this reminded me of their earthquake. Over 200,000 people died in Haiti during that earthquake. Hopefully the numbers don't get that high this time. So sad.

Do you know if this number includes all the cholera deaths or is it primary fatalities only? I truly don't know how they make such estimates especially in regions like Haiti and Syria. Syria is already dealing with a cholera crisis, and I'd imagine that plus exposure and the chaos of IDPs there's likely no reliable way to track.
People have the impossible task of assessing what pisses the least risk: building collapse, the elements in the open, crowded and unsanitary shelters and camps. This is why I will always fear earthquakes more than hurricanes and I've seen some pretty extreme hurricane impact.
I'm another board with someone from there who posted this which lines up somewhat with the above rec:
Please, if you have the means, consider donating to help rescue and relief efforts. The Syrian American Medical Society and MedGlobal both work directly with Syrian hospitals. The Turkish Red Crescent and AKUT are legit and hard at work assisting with rescue and recovery in Turkey at this very moment. Avoid the Syrian Red Crescent; the funds don’t reach the civilian population.

Nearly 20,000 people have been killed and tens of thousands injured after a magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck Turkey and Syria on Monday, officials said.
Teams are racing to rescue survivors as aid agencies warn that new snowfall, as well as a lack of water, communications and power, could cause a deadly "secondary disaster."
