I’m so glad we’re not watching TFG, of course. But this thread is 🔥
Initial text: “I'm looking at a transcript of Biden's State of the Union: It has four sentences on abortion rights. Four. By comparison, the speech has 19 sentences on 'junk fees' This is it? Half of the country has been stripped of their right be seen as a full human being and we get four sentences?“
I was kind of watching the first half with some extended family, then skipped the second and came here to see what I missed. Guess I'll have to check in with the main stream media!
I thought it was a good, normal, run of the mill, SOTU. No surprises. He stated his accomplishments, and his future plans, without alienating his base. I was surprised (why, I'm not sure), by how rude some Republicans were. Biden is looking pretty old, and I worry that will make him unelectable.

I’m a little bit here. ONE reference to LGBTQ equality - the Equality Act is not going to fix the genocide that is raining down in half the states in this country. No clear reference to any of that.
Everyone at work is celebrating because he mentioned “my thing” in the State of the Union (Medicaid expansion) and honestly I just want to cry. They are trying to kill us and it feels like most people haven’t even noticed.
Edit: for contrast, SHS didn’t mention it as explicitly but her speech ABSOLUTELY staked a claim on the “culture war” issues that Biden didn’t address head on, which is again, terrifying.
Hubby watched & I walked through the living room a few times...Biden looked old, I heard the GOP booing & heckling a few times and was just generally irritated.
Also, all the pro-Biden/how dare we discuss a primary social media and media frenzy leading up to the speech really hit a nerve with me. I’m not trying to downplay his accomplishments, but I’m also really frustrated that somehow winning a presidential election has become a presumptive 8-year term rather than 4. He’s already 80 years old. Why can’t his legacy be handpicking and supporting a woman, or another POC, or a Hispanic or gay president, and working to unite the party to hand off the leadership to them? Why do we need another 4 years of an old white man in the White House and why are those who suggest this accused of trying to hand the keys to the GOP?
Pre-speech thoughts: 1. I noticed the crayon pins, here's some other pin info www.axios.com/2023/02/08/state-of-the-union-joe-biden-1870-crayon-lapel-pins 2. Bernie was wearing an n95, good for him. 3. Did Jill and Doug kiss hello on the lips? How is that still (or ever?) a thing? Shudder. 4. I'm pretty sure Sinema made a snarky comment about Buttigieg when he didn't acknowledge her. I liked the other obvious snubs people were giving.

Interesting out fit choice here
Apparently she was seen walking around holding a big white balloon. Perhaps she was also trying to dress like the spy balloon.
social media was having a field day with the SOTU.
I'm rapidly becoming more "Joe biden needs to bow out gracefully, on top, while things are going well & do his best to ensure Democrats victory in 2024 and make a nice legacy for himself" instead of running again (also see Nancy Pelosi for tips on passing the torch to the next generation. If the GOP puts up somebody in their 40s or 50s, he's going to look decrepit next to them.

I thought Biden did great. And I won't be mad if he runs again, even though I too would prefer he step aside. I just can't forget that the reason he won the nomination in 2020 was because he was the most popular choice for Black voters. Unless they've changed their minds about him en masse, I'll support him.
