side note but DH and I were shocked a few weeks ago when we learned that Ron DeSantis is only 44. For sure we thought he was older than that.
That is surprising....Ā and sad too - he has more time to ruin this country.Ā Ā
This is part of the reason he's scary to me - besides his general awfulness. We moved to FL twelve-ish years ago, and it felt like a very different place then. I work/ed in higher ed, and the landscape is dramatically different in a very short time with him at the helm.
My uneducated prediction is that he won't run this time around - he'll let TFG and Biden fight it out - he won't have to go against an incumbent, and maybe the TFG-train will lose some momentum (or, at the very least, he'll be *really* old by then, and a lot can happen). Whichever one gets elected can't run again without further dismantling of the government, so the following election is when he'll swoop in. Ugh.
Also, all the pro-Biden/how dare we discuss a primary social media and media frenzy leading up to the speech really hit a nerve with me. Iām not trying to downplay his accomplishments, but Iām also really frustrated that somehow winning a presidential election has become a presumptive 8-year term rather than 4. Heās already 80 years old. Why canāt his legacy be handpicking and supporting a woman, or another POC, or a Hispanic or gay president, and working to unite the party to hand off the leadership to them? Why do we need another 4 years of an old white man in the White House and why are those who suggest this accused of trying to hand the keys to the GOP?
Iāve been trying to put this into words for years when people say that we need Biden to beat Trump. Thank you!

As a fellow Floridan I just want him out of Florida. He's the first governor that seems to be actively trying to make the state worse, and succeeding. My hope is he will run this cycle and be defeated. Then we can be rid of him as governor and potential president.

IMO Desantis is more likely to run now, because he has momentum and in 4 years he runs the risk of being old news. He won't be in office and the media cycle is so quick right now, they will have moved on to a new shiny object. Right now, he's in a sweet spot where he has high name recognition and voters know him as someone who "owns the libs" but almost no one has heard him give a speech, debate etc. He's getting all the 'good' publicity without lot of facetime. He also stands a better contrast to ancient Joe Biden/Trump. In 2028 lord let's hope someone under 60 is the nominee for the Dems.

Ugh, you're probably right. They're all awful, though, new and shiny or old and tired š
27.3 million viewers watched President Biden's State of the Union address on TV ā the second smallest SOTU audience in at least 30 years, AP's David Bauder writes from Nielsen data.
That was down 28% from the 38.2 million people who saw Biden's SOTU last year. š„ Stunning stat: 73% of the people who watched Biden's speech were 55 and older. Only 5% were under age 35.

I am 37, however I watched on youtube on my computer. That's how I watched last year too. *shrug*
I find it reassuring that no one watched the SOTU. It means our lives are nice and boring again. We've been like adrenaline junkies for so long that we don't know how to take a rest when it happens. Just sit around and whine about everyone being old. LOL!

Are they only looking at folks who watched on tv? Because I feel like more and more people have gone exclusively to streaming services (we no longer have cable or antenna tv, we exclusively stream), so if they arenāt including those who streamed in their numbers thereās no way theyāll have an accurate idea of whoās watching.
That said, I didnāt even realize it was scheduled until the day of. I read the NYT and WaPo daily but somehow missed it. But I also only watch things that I pay to upgrade to ad free, so I havenāt watched a commercial in years, which had been a way I knew when it would beā¦

They count streaming services, too. In fact, the watch numbers published are probably more accurate now than ever.

This is right. What it doesnāt account for is people who read the transcript rather than watching live (me, always.) But Iām guessing it isnāt a huge proportion of the overall engagement.
Although not surprised, SHS was awful with her R rebuttal. Totally tone deaf and missed the mark by miles.
If they wanted to create a contrast to an old guy Biden to a fresh female Sanders, it flopped. She was stiff and all doom/gloom. Biden, no spring chicken, still looked more vibrant and ready for action.
