We watched the entire Puppy Bowl yesterday and I watched 90% of the Super Bowl. I'm not a football fan, so I don't know a lot of the rules and the Puppy Bowl's rules really threw me off when watching the Super Bowl. I feel completely ridiculous saying this.

I feel a bit bad for her, because I feel like it's a lose/lose situation no matter what she does...everybody's going to criticize and have an opinion, I do think it's remarkable that she just had a baby and was able to recover so quickly to get pregnant again, PLUS be in such great shape to even work and perform at that level. I'm glad that she's a mom, and a pregnant woman who can still do her job and be in the spotlight. Maybe it just opens to the door to more conversations about expectations for supporting pregnant women, no matter what their choices (dial it back or still do 100% or just do 50% of their regular work/demands)
I was in reddit thread on the super bowl, and someone commented the same thing. Then a bunch of posters chimed in that they had seen Rhianna in concert, and that's how she's always been as a performer.
Ok now that it’s confirmed I feel like I can be fully annoyed.
Maybe just because of my history and being that I’m obviously sensitive here I hate that she essentially turned the whole thing into a pregnancy announcement.
She should have made the announcement before the show.
I’ll never look at her the same.
Maybe this is flameful or I need to get over myself. Idk.
I obviously have some things to still work out personally. LOL
@@
please get over yourself. I also struggled with IF and wtf to this.
I'm also really side-eyeing some of the posters' disappointment with the halftime show. no wonder some posters left here, my god.

I thought she just looked totally relaxed, like she could have been performing for a small group of close friends instead of the majority of the country. She just looks like she owns the stage.

I don't know much about her performances, but it's interesting to hear that this was "normal" for her. I was expecting big energy like we'd had in the last few shows with tons of dancing and the main singer being very busy.
Question: I'm reading some criticism of Rhianna for potentially lip syncing. I'd assume that EVERYONE who performs at the Super Bowl is lip syncing for technical/sound reasons. Is this correct?

I assume the same thing. The music has at a minimum the back up singer part at least from what I could hear.

This is the vibe I got. She was moving a little bit more gently than usual (notably not getting low), but I was texting with two people who have seen her in person and they both told me it didn't feel off to them. When she was front and center in the camera she was clearly into it, she just didn't feel the need to crank it up to 11.
I've never seen her perform, but that makes sense to me. It's the same way she is on the red carpet, she's frequently the person doing the ABSOLUTE MOST in terms of the clothes, but her demeanor and presentation is very like, "Hello, you may enjoy being in my presence now." She's not working it, she just IS IT.
Side note - did anybody else notice at the end when the fireworks were just like a solid wall of explosion and she looked up at them with a little smile? it felt very "stars! they're just like us!" Like she was oohing and ahhing in her own head. Loved it.

I’ve always assumed this for pop music and people who do a lot of dancing while singing. But when there is a full band, like Springsteen, I would think maybe no. But this could also be my bias towards bands and playing instruments, where the live music is the performance. Whereas shows like this, the whole thing is the performance (flying tables, dancers groups, etc). If that makes sense.
I also always assume for someting like the super bowl that lipsyncing is the norm. They have to creat the stage quickly and there wouldn't be the normal set ups that you could have for a stadium concert.
But then it does make it all seem sort of silly when you think about it. All of this, just for the artist to lip sync? IDK
I was looking back at the last 13 years of performances. I realize I much prefer the years when there are a series of performers verse just one person.
I think what felt "off" about Rihanna's performance is that she was doing choreography along with all of the other dancers, but the other dancers were WAY more high energy. I think she should have had different choreography so it wasn't so obvious that she wasn't moving in the same way. I didn't see anything wrong with anything she did, it was just the contrast that was weird to me. When she was alone or doing something different it was better. I didn't care for her costume but I think she's a good example of someone who would look fantastic wearing a paper bag. She is just flawlessly gorgeous and confident.
I agree she couldn't win with the pregnancy announcement. If she did it before, it would have been all anyone talked about leading up to it. Now it's the big news afterward. I AM surprised she's pregnant. I know it's physically possible to get pregnant again so quickly, but she's a busy woman - especially preparing for this halftime show - and I just think she must be superhuman to do everything she does work-wise, adjust to being a new mother, and then carrying another pregnancy basically immediately after. I hope she has a lot of help and support!
Wow! This is the only place I’ve seen these types of comments about her performance and pregnancy announcement.
She really was damned no matter what. She probably wasn’t pregnant when this was planned, at least not with the 2nd one. We don’t get to dictate when and how people announce things.
And you don't get to dictate how people feel about things, either. *shrug*

I'm obviously easy to please because I liked the halftime show, but I like Rhianna's music. Yes I was sitting there doing the is she or isn't she" game, but I guess my expectations are low when it comes to things like halftime shows and commercials because there were several of those I liked as well. I'm mostly just salty the Chiefs won and that a call at the end had such big implications on the game (Bengals fan here). I loved the Clueless commercial, the Miles Teller commercial, the Diddy commercial with all the 90s early 2000s artists/songs. I'm sure there were more but those are the ones off the top of my head.

No, sure don’t. Was just a bit surprised to see it here, honestly. *shrug*
This is a board that posts @ warnings on it's threads when there is child related content because there's a whole lot of us here that have had issues with fertility/childbearing or in general don't want to talk about kid stuff. Of course we're going to discuss our complicated feelings. Or did you think you were on ML?
The general criticism happens after every Super Bowl performance. I'm seeing a lot of opinion articles out there that address some of these very topics, such as her performance energy, etc.
I, for one, don't understand why we continue to have half time shows. They've all been very lackluster for a very long time. Except maybe last years, which would be hard to top.

as so-called allies I'd have expected this board to celebrate this woman's personal and professional successes rather than take offense to them and center in on yourselves. it's not Rihanna's job to accommodate you despite what you think.

No one is asking her to. We've all acknowledged that our feelings are our own.
I was tickled she brought out her makeup compact during the performance. Talk about genius marketing placement.

Last year's was good, and I thought the JLo and Shakira one a few years ago was good.
I'm not looking for anything more than a mildly enjoyable 15 minutes from the half time show, so I really enjoyed it. I guess I'm easy to please, but I thought Rihanna's performance was visually impressive, and everyone but my H knew all the songs (He apparently had Rihanna confused with Arianna Grande LOL).
When the super bowl comes around next year, I will have absolutely zero memory of who performed this year, and I'm OK with that. I don't need it to be life changing.
It may be partially the fact that I am occasionally a very contrary creature, but I've come to the point where I've decided I LOVED that show. Every bit of it. The fact that she came out in a bulky outfit knowing full well people were going to expect her to strip to less at some point, and instead put on MORE clothing. A whole ass sleeping bag. Yes. The fact that she felt zero need to step up her own dancing or add random quick changes or clutter it up with guest stars. Just Her in head to toe attention grabbing red with a fuckton of backup dancers wearing hoodies made of duvets and some floating platforms, rubbing her belly and knowing we're all going "wait...is she.... " I'm not even a fan in any meaningful way, but like, it was enjoyable, I know all those songs, it was fun to watch, and I felt a moment of kinship with a famous person when she looked up and just smiled at the crazy fireworks while they lit up her face golden. My needs were met.
My needs were less met by the field conditions. can we talk about that some more? How the fuck was that ok?

I loved her performance too, and her coat was a tribute to Andre Leon Talley
