I don’t have today off but both kids do. DD is going to hang out with her grandma and a couple of relatives who are second or third cousins or something. One is a young woman who is a radiology tech who does travel assignments. She’s in our area, and DD really likes spending time with her.
DS is running a high fever. It went over 104 yesterday so we went to urgent care. No Covid, no flu, no strep. Just a shitty virus. Other than fever and congestion, he feels pretty ok. He’s just sleeping a lot. Poor guy.
Pretty low key restful weekend. I made a not healthy but a back to my roots meal of beans and ham cooked all day, cornbread and meatloaf yesterday and it was so good.
Today I have a meeting with my boss. I am trying to lobby for a new hire, a health equity position. We will see how this goes. Then I have a lunch meeting with the mayor's office and others on how to spend a pretty decent amount of opioid settlement money. So let's hope these are both productive.
I'm back to work. I'm feeling kind of spacey and tired (not on strong pain meds, just on Tylenol). But I just have to sit here, so that's what I am going to do. Low expectations. DD woke us up twice crying once from a nightmare and once because she couldn't sleep after the nightmare, so those didn't help either.
Beau and I stopped by an open house on Saturday and actually really liked the place. I think we're going to put in an offer today. They want all offers in by 5 PM. I guess they have a few people interested with FHA and VA loans, but ours would be conventional with a hefty down payment, so our realtor thinks we stand a good chance. I'm considering writing up a letter talking about how we can't wait to start our new family's life in this house, etc... to see if that helps seal the deal. The only thing that sucks is the kids won't get to see it before we put in an offer. We don't get them back until Wednesday. I think this place is exactly what they're hoping for in a house though, so I don't see them being upset with us choosing it if it comes down to it. But we have been trying to make sure they felt like they're part of the process so I wish we could take them to see it first.
mommyatty, aw I'm sorry - such a bummer. My kids had that right before Christmas - just a high fever, headaches, a little congestion. It was tough to get the fevers under control. The good news is that the virus was really quick and they were feeling better within a day or two.
It was a quiet weekend, which was just what we needed. DD2 was supposed to go to footskills on Friday, but all of her friends bailed so she was happy to miss it. We took the kids to dinner instead. Then Saturday DD2 had indoor soccer at 7, then an 8am basketball game 20 mins away. We made it by the end of the 1st quarter. Both kids had friends over (DD1 had her "boyfriend" over - they've been "dating" for over a year and this is the first time they've hung out outside of school). I made cookies with the younger kids and then made pizza dough for dinner.
Sunday I felt really blah all day. DD1 went to a friend's house so DD2 and I hung out all day. Took the dog for a long walk, played with him in the yard, watched the USWNT vs Japan. Still feeling blah today - headache, nausea, fatigue - I hope I can snap out of it.
The kids are on vacation this week. They are among the very few that didn't fly out to a warm climate for break. DD2 will go to basketball camp with a few buddies, DD1 still can't play so she will likely be horizontal for most of the break since most of her friends aren't around. I hope they have a good blend of rest and fun this week.

We took today off as ds1 has a travel futsal tournament. Our coach’s dad was killed by a drunk driver yesterday morning on his way to work so Dh has had to take care of all the team stuff (coordination, assist coaching, calling league/club to tell them and get a backup coach etc) as the coach obviously isn’t making the tournament. It’s our team’s first time playing futsal (they are a comp soccer team) so the expectations are low and we’re losing but it’s a great experience and opportunity for them. We just feel so awful for our coach (whom we all love) so it’s a big cloud over something everyone was really looking forward to.

mommyatty, I hope your DS feels better quickly. Idk about everyone else, but I’m pretty tired of my family being sick all the damn time. Right now my H is sick. My father in law has been in and out of the hospital with heart concerns and H and his sister are fretting because they are both sick — she has been down for 3 weeks — and they don’t want to get him or their mom sick but they also want to help because their mom is getting really rundown with all the back and forth.
We had a nice weekend despite H being sick. He stayed in bed but I took my oldest for a nice hike since our kayak trip was canceled, we played a lot of boardgames. I’m working today and the kids are in school as a weather makeup day. I don’t have a lot of meetings so I hope to plow through this checklist.
On Saturday morning, DS1, DD, and I had taekwondo. Then DD went to a friend's house for the afternoon. DH and I went to dinner and then to see the Blue Man Group while FIL watched the kids. We went with my parents, 2 of my brothers and their wife/SO, and my niece and her husband. It was so nice to have a night out. Yesterday, we enjoyed the beautiful day by going for a hike. We found a cool playground and went to dinner. The kids are off school today but I am still working. It is gloomy and rainy today, so they are yelling and running around while I'm trying to do work. My right arm is killing me. It is sore after any workout, especially the next morning. I can't wait for my appointment on Thursday with the sports medicine dr. Of course I have a private lesson for taekwondo tomorrow and testing on Thursday evening. I'm trying to rest my arm as much as possible, but that's nearly impossible.
Birthday day update: DH did get me a cake and balloons, so that is a win. DD flat out asked if mommy needed to take her to the store to get cake and he said no I got it covered. DD and I had French dips for lunch Saturday, and I got my free Dutch Bros drink. I did work for a few hours, and we delivered a tax return to a friend and had a nice visit. DD made spaghetti for dinner with homemade sauce and DH and her cleaned up the kitchen. Sunday, I didn't work and had a home day. Did the laundry, cleaned house, watched some TV, and meal prepped a little before going to my parents for family birthday dinner. DD was so tired she was a mess at my parents' house and instead of her coming to work today I left her home sleeping. I gave her a short todo list with a nap included. She got her voice back staying home Friday but she just looks wiped out.
We’ve survived two days of gluten free and it sucks. The hives were looking better last night, but they’re back with a vengeance today. He’s also got a gnarly cough that’s developed, so it’s likely the rash is more associated with that than gluten. I know nothing at this point. We’re on day 111 of hives, if anyone is curious.
It’s kind of pretty, I guess?
We had a nice weekend. DD is grounded from friends and TV, and I kind of love it. We went bowling and a long hike with geocaching on Saturday, a park play date and mini golf on Sunday.
DS’s cough didn’t really start until yesterday evening, so we’ll be laying low today.
k3am, it is such a pretty pattern for hives but 111 days is just insane. Hugs!
Dear Charlie Please stop calling and asking the same question. Our answer is the same and no amount of phone calls is going to change that. You aren't our only client. I can't wait for you to pick up tomorrow and hopefully leave us the F alone. Cranky tax lady
Day 3 gluten free complete. He ate nothing but a PBJ sandwich yesterday and "wasn't hungry" for breakfast today. Not sure if he's just being a turd because he's pissed about the diet, if it's because he's just overall not feeling well, or (most likely) some combination of the two.
waverly, I don't think they're concerned for celiac since he doesn't have any symptoms. He's just got bloodwork that shows a potential very low positive allergy to a few grains and elimination diet is basically the only way to rule it in or out. They can't do skin testing because he already has the rash.
k3am, I'm sorry the diet is going so badly! What are his favorite foods normally? Does he have staples he always eats? I could try to suggest good subs for those specific items?
twinmomma, his diet is mostly cereal (Cheerios, so fine.. also got cinnamon Chex, and if he won't eat it, I will. It's good.), waffles (he refuses to try the GF ones we got), toast (he's okay with the kind of bread we bought.. whatever was available at costco), PBJ (we're okay there), pancakes, nuggets, pizza, and hamburgers.
He honestly just refuses to even try stuff because it's different from what he normally eats. I'm hopeful that he'll eventually just get hungry enough to give it a go.
We are pathetic. He doesn't eat veggies, eggs, or most dairy (the only dairy he eats is cheese on pizza).
Sunday we went to BJ's for dinner, which felt pretty normal since they have a GF pizza and pizookie. Monday we went to breakfast, but they had no GF versions of pancake, waffle, or toast and he refuses to eat any of the stuff on the menu that is naturally GF.
k3am, my kids like the Garden Lites Veggies Made Great muffins. I love them too. They are all gluten free, and the double chocolate, the banana bread, and the cinnamon swirl are delicious.
DD1 eats NO THINGS. Plain pasta, pizza, cheese and crackers, alllll the junk food. She will eat these. Just hide the box...
mae0111, we have the cinnamon roll version of those.. I had the chocolate muffins you linked in my cart, but he let me know he wouldn't eat them because they're "pretending to be cupcakes and he doesn't like cake." All the eyerolls. I don't think he's tried them yet, hopefully he'll like them.
k3am, That's basically what beau's son eats too. And same situation - if it's not the exact one he's used to, it's a whole thing to get him to try the new version, so I hear you on how hard that must be.
For the GF waffles - if you make those, you may want to toast them longer than a normal Eggo. I find that they are kind of mushy and fall apart a lot more easily than the Eggos I buy for my girls who are not GF. That should help if it's a texture thing. The GF frozen pancakes by Van's are very weird. Beau's son loves them, but I think it's because he doesn't know any better. lol Homemade GF pancakes are usually pretty much exactly the same as regular.
If he likes burgers, brace yourself for mushy burger buns. The GF ones just don't hold up as well. Beau's son and I usually just eat the burger with no bun instead.
And I wish I could say that as a GF adult my diet is different... But I eat cereal every day for breakfast and probably 1-2 times a week for dinner too. I should buy stock in Cheerios at this point...
mae0111, We tried the banana bread version of those and all of us thought they were kind of weird. I had bought them for myself to make myself feel like a healthier person and then tried to pawn them off on the kids. haha
k3am, I'm so sorry you're having to deal with this. My kids would have a very hard time with GF. DH and I are mostly GF - for cereal I like rice chex and choco chimps, and that's mostly what the kids eat, too. Will he do french fries? Bacon and eggs?
sdlaura, he will do french fries, but I'm finding even those can be tricky.. They thankfully forgot his fries when we were at BJ's.. DD had ordered some, and I ate one (which was delish), and noticed that they're not just straight fried potatoes, pulled up the allergen info, and yep.. wheat. He will eat bacon (if we force him... the kid is broken), but never more than one piece. And he's a hard pass on eggs.
k3am, even DD who loves her fruits and veggies would have a hard time being GF. She loves her pasta and carbs and doesn't care for meat. I wish you the best of luck.
The forecasted winter storm is causing everyone to want to see us today. We are so booked this afternoon and then nothing until Friday. The city does shut down for an inch of snow most of the time. LOL
She likes Canyon Bakehouse for bread and bagels. Target carries it.
Cheerios and Chex are both GF.
King Arthur mixes are so good the rest of us gladly eat them too. Their muffins are a family favorite.
My favorite flour is Bob’s Red Mill 1 to 1 baking. You legit cannot tell the difference (except the price!). But we make cakes, waffles, etc with them.
Oreos make a GF version now and they’re great.
For eating out - Domino’s does GF pizza (not safe for Celiac) that she says is good. And IHOP has pancakes and waffles that are GF now (also doubtful it’s safe for Celiac).
In elementary, I feel like there was always surprise food events. I sent some individual packs of M&Ms to her teacher to keep as a “just in case”. She cared way more about being left out back then.
