I know this can vary, but give me a ballpark of what you would expect renovation of a small full bathroom to cost? It's about 5 foot square. We have room for a very small sink vanity, a toilet, and are taking out the tub/shower combo to replace with shower only with a frameless sliding glass door. HCOL but not *insanely* high cost of living.
Basically, the contractor we've used for a bunch of other stuff (our big addition, our powder room renovation) gave us a quote that seems higher than I would expect so I'm wondering if my expectations were out of whack.

We paid $14,000 in 2017 - included expanding the bathroom into a hall closet to give extra space. It was a single contractor and he did all the work. We paid him $6,720 for his time and $2,000 for materials related to demo and rebuild
other higher cost buckets:
frameless shower door: $1750 tile: $1,800 (yes, high I know...) the rest was paint, vent, lights, vanity, mirror, etc...
it was a tub/shower combo with toilet and pedestal sink. Now I have a vanity, toilet and walk in shower.
We finished a small full bath reno last month and it came to $21-22k including materials (HCOL). Labor was $15k. This was with our lowest quote (by far) because they were a new business. I regret going with the lowest quote, they made lots of mistakes (all fixed, but still, a hassle) and small things still bug me.
ETA: We took out a shower / tub combo insert and replaced with a tub + tile. We also moved the location of the toilet.
In 2021 we renovated a full hall bath for $9,000 and I would say that materials were about $6K and labor was $3K. We were also doing a primary bath reno right after so maybe our labor costs were a little cheaper? We went from a single sink to double sinks but kept the layout of the bathroom. We used LVP flooring, a tub insert, tiled shower, and generally Home Depot/Lowe's grade products.
Huh. These prices are not as high as I would have guessed. I've never done a bathroom renno, but it's something I'm interested in doing in the medium term.

We paid 20k + fixtures/tile/tub/cabinets so about 25k. Small bathroom but lots of tile work and moving plumbing and building walls so feels fairly representative of an "average" bathroom.
We were quoted double that by two design/build firms. We went with a guy who worked with one helper.
This was in 2021 I think (the Covid years rn together.... Late Covid so probably early 2022).
I’m in the middle of 3! Bathroom remodels and a master bedroom retexture, lighting, carpet and trim on the master and upper level. Bathroom work includes 1 with a small shower and 48” vanity and toilet. 2nd includes tub, removing small wall, cabinet. 3rd is master, 2 sink vanity, 5’ shower only, 2 pocket doors. Each is full retiling of shower/tubs, floors. New lighting, mirrors, fixtures and cabinets. Cabinets are ordered from a cabinet company, semi-custom? so that definitely has upped the cost, but they match the bar area we re-did.
I know the 4 projects technically aren’t equal, but if they were, we’re at about 30K per. I think if we watched the budget tighter on tile selections, countertops, cabinets and mirrors, we probably could get that down to $20-$25k each. I don’t think the estimate broke it down by room, but I’ll see if I can find it and update if so.
ETA: I also didn’t get additional quotes, because these guys do great work and are fast because they aren’t working on more than 1 job at a time.
We are on week 2 of a full bathroom gut remodel on a secondary bathroom, including jackhammering concrete to run new plumbing, some structural work to change doorway locations, and running all new plumbing and electrical in the walls. The room is 8' x 5'.
Our contractor's quote was $6500 in Nov 2022. In the 6 months since then, cost of supplies has increased so we're $800 over plus $400 in unexpected material/labour to fix damage discovered in demo. I spent ~$2500 on finishes, but that was definitely on the budget side. I snagged some floor model sales and chose cheaper options on some items to save money.
I think we'll end somewhere around $10k all in. I didn't even get quotes from other companies because our contractor is a unicorn. We're planning to do the primary bathroom in a year or so. Preliminary quote is $8500 for an 8' x 8' room. I'm planning to spend more on nicer finishes so we'll be at $15k+ with the same contractor.

Following as we are looking to do a master bath remodel (approx 8' x 6'), possibly next year (depending on what DH and I receive for bonuses). I was hoping we could land in the range of $10-$25k, depending on what we decide to do, so from others' comments, our range sounds feasible. We are in an MCOL area. (Minimum would be replace the fiberglass molded shower and sliding doors with tiled shower and frameless door, plus new countertop and sinks. Maximum would be basically a full gut with changing the location of the shower.)

Thanks, everyone! We were quoted $21k (supplying our own fixtures) so it sounds like we're in the right zone. It just surprised me because the powder room reno was only $6k with a lot of the same elements, but maybe the shower adds a lot to the cost -- and the powder room quote was a lot lower than I expected, so I probably shouldn't be using it as a benchmark!

This sounds spot on to me, honestly. We spent just under $15k on our full bath reno in 2015, but only $3,500 on a half bath reno 6 months later in 2016. With cost and labor price escalations since those years, I think you are definitely getting a good price but the discrepancies between the two rooms makes sense to me.

I like this answer - IIRC you are pretty local to me, so I may have to get your contractor information at some point! We are not ready to do a remodel yet, but I am hoping in the next 1-2 years. I don't see us changing the layout, but the bathroom is very dated and needs a facelift.
