Clearly I am in the wrong kind of work. Too bad I didn’t pursue elected office or SCOTUS so I could get away with murder. Figuratively AND literally.
All the government workers I know who can’t even accept a nice bottle of champagne or box of chocolates from a coworker or member of the public due to ethics rules would like to have a word.
That's what DH and I keep aghasting about (is that a verb? it is now.)
He works in local government and once had to return a $10 Dairy Queen giftcard because although it was under the $25 limit, the City Manager didn't want the perception of impropriety.
Y'all, it wouldn't even have paid for 3 blizzards, and yet...

My wife works in local government and… yup. It boggles.
I was listening to a news interview with some R politician/senator when they asked about Senate oversight- specifically with today’s allegation of undisclosed $6K/month tuition payments for a child Justice Thomas is/was raising. The R acted all kinds of offended because it “sure seemed like” they were targeting a conservative for reporting/investigation.
Lindsey Graham's complaint was that liberal judges had travel expenses reimbursed for speaking at universities. This was what he found as an apples to apples comparison. I don't even understand how they can speak without laughing at themselves over the hypocracy.
My husband works for a gov contractor & there's always hand wringing over offering catered lunch for meetings that span over meal times to gov employees. Meanwhile...there's free tires, private school tuition, living rent-free like it's NBD.
Ditto OPs re disclosure rules. My entire financial portfolio is reviewed and reported annually.
I was highly annoyed about all this before, but this article takes it to another level for me with the response from Crow’s office. They are trying to say that they are helping at-risk youth, etc etc etc. Um, this kid had been living with a Supreme Court Justice!!
Customs and Border Protection records revealed that the justice and his wife, Virginia Thomas, took a round trip between Hawaii and New Zealand in November 2010 on Mr. Crow’s private jet, according to the letter. Senator Ron Wyden, Democrat of Oregon, writing to Mr. Crow’s lawyer, demanded that he supply more information about the financial relationship between the two men.
