“In 2014, one of Texas billionaire Harlan Crow’s companies purchased a string of properties on a quiet residential street in Savannah, Georgia. It wasn’t a marquee acquisition for the real estate magnate, just an old single-story home and two vacant lots down the road. What made it noteworthy were the people on the other side of the deal: Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas and his relatives.
The transaction marks the first known instance of money flowing from the Republican megadonor to the Supreme Court justice. The Crow company bought the properties for $133,363 from three co-owners — Thomas, his mother and the family of Thomas’ late brother, according to a state tax document and a deed dated Oct. 15, 2014, filed at the Chatham County courthouse.”
WTAF. When Nazi-loving billionaires buy themselves a SCJ, shouldn’t there be an investigation? Hello Chief Justice? Anyone?
Text: NEWS: A little scoop building off of @propublica’s great reporting: @slate can confirm Clarence Thomas’ mom definitely still lives in the house Harlan Crow bought. At least as of 2 weeks ago when @byjoelanderson interviewed her there for Slow Burn season 8

I have not a single word.
I’m also sort of staggered that this is only coming to light now. We knew his wife was a literal insurrectionist. Was no one looking into his background? How did all this stuff get buried?
Why do checks and balances not exist for our SCOTUS? Because that’s what it feels like.
Unfortunately, in practice, all checks and balances only exist if the opposite party of whoever is being checked has control.
I just read an oped on this. SCOTUS apparently doesn't have to follow really any disclosure rules. Sorry it's paywalled, but maybe someone can gift. It was really interesting

Clarence Thomas has reported on required financial disclosure forms that his family received rental income totaling hundreds of thousands of dollars from a firm called Ginger, Ltd., Partnership. But that company — a Nebraska real estate firm launched in the 1980s by his wife and her relatives — has not existed since 2006. That year, the family real estate company was shut down and a separate firm was created, state incorporation records show. The similarly named firm assumed control of the shuttered company’s land leasing business, according to property records. Since that time, however, Thomas has continued to report income from the defunct company — between $50,000 and $100,000 annually in recent years — and there is no mention of the newer firm, Ginger Holdings, LLC, on the forms.

What are the options here? There is no way the House will vote to remove him even if he is impeached. Could he be indicted and convicted for money laundering and removed that way?

I’m genuinely asking because I don’t know: is there a prohibition against SCOTUS Justices being convicted and jailed? Or is it like president which somehow allows this situation?
I am deeply confused about checks and balances in our system beyond politeness and human decency which are clearly not working out…

He can be convicted and even imprisoned, but only impeachment can remove him from the bench and that is never going to happen. In a normally functioning political system, he would be pressured to resign so that no one had to figure out how any of that would work and he might even be pardoned a la Nixon if he did so quietly. But we are not in a normal political climate so 🤷♀️🤷♀️🤷♀️

I’m hysterically laugh-crying at this. Like… we are not ok.

So he gets “income” from an essentially nonexistent company. I’m not an expert, but that sounds like a basic money laundering scheme.
Sounds like this is how he's hiding bribes that he's getting.
So from what I'm gathering, if you have enough money you can buy yourself a SC Justice, and there doesn't appear to be anything that can be done about it.

You had a great run, America. Sorry it didn’t last. 😭
Clearly I am in the wrong kind of work. Too bad I didn’t pursue elected office or SCOTUS so I could get away with murder. Figuratively AND literally.
All the government workers I know who can’t even accept a nice bottle of champagne or box of chocolates from a coworker or member of the public due to ethics rules would like to have a word.

I work at a bank, in a role that never deals with people outside the bank. I still take a course twice a year on bribery and ethics. I would like our country to hold a SUPREME COURT JUSTICE to a higher standard!
