And all hopes of adding a smidge of between-the-studs storage are dashed -- it's almost all cinderblock in there, and they used every smidgen of space for the most part! We're stuck with the same small medicine cabinet they had before. I'm going to see if I can put a tiny 11x14 cabinet high up where it would look like a picture frame, but otherwise we're out of luck.

Oh my goodness, were you expecting that?
I think high up cabinets is a great idea. You could also put a second medicine cabinet above the toilet. We had a rental house with that set up and liked it.

Thanks for the suggestions, but the window is directly above the toilet, and since the ceiling slants down it takes all the available space.
Here's a "before" picture:
I am going to see if he can frame out a little niche to the left of the sink, and -- pushing my luck -- see if he can even put an electrical outlet in the side of it for toothbrush recharging, but I'm not holding my breath.
Will your new vanity have storage, ie drawers? Our basement bathroom is quite small and just the vanity with a couple of drawers is sufficient, storage-wise…
Would it possible to add a shelf above the doorframe? We’ve found it useful when we had tiny bathrooms.
Ooh, good question. I'm too short for that to be useful but maybe for my husband and son it might work. I'll have to look. We do have a linen cabinet just outside the bathroom, so we're not actually that tight on storage in general, just for things that need to be at-hand, like brushes and hair products and stuff. I am thinking once it's all together maybe I can do a floating shelf above the toilet that I can pull off the supports if I ever need to access the toilet tank. I think there just needs to be room to set stuff down that isn't the edges of the very small sink vanity.
They did have the genius idea to make the door open outward. My house was generally so well-designed I'm really surprised that wasn't already the case! That should make it feel less crowded in there. Here's the update from today -- all the underlayment is in for tile so tiling should start tomorrow!

Update: Bathroom and shower floor tile are set (but not grouted yet). It was dark in there, I think it will be much brighter with more light, but here's how it's looking so far. I asked them to install the flowered tile on point (i.e. on the diagonal) and I think it makes a huge difference ... I'm really surprised that in the many installation photos I saw no one had done that.
