MD folks, am I missing something?

I keep seeing TV ads for David Trone for Senate. I looked up on the board of elections, and there is a primary in May 2024. 


Am I missing a special election or are we looking at a year long senate campaign.

and Lordy, this guys must have some money to get getting this many TV spots this early. Or maybe no one watches the nightly news anymore and the time is super cheap? But geez it seemed early.

Early airtime is way cheaper and one (really lazy) campaign strategy is to declare and begin campaigning so early that other candidates either decide it is not worth it to run or can’t beat your name recognition. I have no idea about MD or this guy but that’s my guess.

Yes I am seeing his ads at the end of YouTube content. My first thought was Jesus Christ I thought he just ran but that was his (successful) Congressional bid; now he’s trying for the Senate.

Trone has a TON of money. He’s the founder of Total Wine & More.

He’s a decent guy, I think, not quite as progressive as I’d like though.

I got TWO mailers from him today. This is going to be a very long year.

He's only on his 2nd term in the House and his re-election was the closest one among MD's eight districts, so like, maybe focus on holding that House seat for the Dems, sir.

to be fair, it's not like solid senate seats come up for grabs very often.  everybody who's ever aspired to the senate in MD is going to see this as their big chance.  When Van Hollen ran for Mikulski's seat she'd been in it since the 80s.  And he's 64, and the way they hang on these days there's no reason not to expect he'll be in for another freaking decade, and trone is older than him anyway.  there's not goign to be a later chance.
