Also, someone on facebook that I unfollowed, but somehow still saw her post was asking for "legitimate" videos of the wildfires. Like they don't believe they are real? People are crazy

People need more going on in their lives if they think the wildfires are a conspiracy theory.
In MN, and I don't recall so many air quality alerts in a span of two months. lucybrown I agree. We've had the AC on more this year than ever, too. Heat mostly, but also the air quality.

I drove into downtown St. Paul yesterday and couldn’t see the skyline. It’s absolutely terrible.

I just hope the rain that's expected helps clear it up a bit.
Now that we have the Americans believing it's all a hoax, they will be completely oblivious to our attack. Take a swig of maple syrup and saddle up the moose army, tonight we ride!!!
Is it expected to hit the east coast again? My mom mentioned this morning that she thought we were but I haven't heard anything locally.
I'm down in NoVa, had the window open in my office and an hour and a half ago started coughing like crazy. I went outside to walk the dog and it's hazy and gross, so I think it's here now.

Indiana here and smoke came back yesterday and today we have some of the worst air quality in the world. Our parks and rec sent out a memo saying they understand if people don't want to send kids out in this, but sense they aren't canceling there are no refunds or makeups. I'm trying to be understanding of that in the sense that this summer is really the first time we have had issues like this/of this severity and they may not have policies and procedures to respond....but our AQI is 252 in the very unhealthy range so get thee shit together and don't encourage people to come out in this.

Oh eww, I guess I should shut my windows! It has been overcast but maybe it's partly smoke?
I am pretty sure I said exactly this earlier in the thread 3 weeks ago so apparently I learned nothing, lol.

I definitely wouldn't expect a refund, they still have to staff as if all of the kids would be attending since they wouldn't know who would not come. Hopefully they have safer indoor options for the kids and are encouraging mask usage outdoors.

Good point, I guess I'd just like them to offer something else like you say indoors and they are not doing that.

I’m in Nova and a shocked at the air quality this afternoon. Not as bad as it was a well out so ago when it was in the news but damn, we are far away from canada!

I am in California, and after all the wildfires in recent years, some of the camps we use have a specific policy cancelling camp in the case of poor air quality and that there are no refunds in those cases. These are camps that are largely outdoors without sufficient space to move indoors. My daughter’s preschool is also largely outdoors and has a similar policy during the school year.

I feel like I am more sensitive to it this time around.

Supposedly the air quality is going I to the red tomorrow. DS is in an outdoor camp (kayaking). So not sure what is going to happen with that tomorrow..today they drove 1.5 hours away, so maybe something similar but not sure it will be better.
Ds1 is in sleep away camp and it's bad there too. And they have no AC and not really an ability to escape so guess I am just going to not worry about it.

Here in IL our AQI has been over 260 yesterday and today and they have now extended the air quality alert to tomorrow. It's never been this bad here, at least not in my life span that I recall. I scrapped our usual outdoor walks and have just stayed indoors all day.

This is common.
Your body learns to recognize (and alert you / avoid) toxins on repeat exposure. I've seen posts here asking how people "get used" to it. I've found the opposite is more likely. People are more cavalier during early exposures before they learn their personal level of tolerance and caution.

Not having clean air to breathe can really fuck with your mental health. So be kind to yourself if you’re feeling blah this week. (This isn’t in response to any post here, just my own personal experience. And what the data shows. If this is you, you’re not alone.)
The physical effects can certainly wear on you (itchy eyes and throat, headaches) but I find my anxiety ramps up with the AQI too.
I just heard this story on NPR about the decision to use purple as an air quality color.
"STONE: It looked like, at the time, looking back at the data, that if we were to put red at hazardous, it would never occur. These were the days in the late '90s and early 2000s before the huge wildfires out west. So it was extremely rare to get into the hazardous range.
ULABY: So rare, the EPA thought purple might never be used. Now, even purple is not bad enough. The very, very worst color is maroon. That's partly because black does not read well on maps, and you cannot see the borders. Still, purple clearly indicates a royal mess."

Thank you for this!
@@@@ summer is hard enough trying to keep my 3 kids entertained and not on technology. Being stuck in our house is making cranky. I’m ready to throw iPads at everyone. /@@@@@

Most of my friends in Thailand had air filters for inside rated especially for smoke and small particulate.
Devoit is one many used. They have a model specially for smoke. You can get them for about $100 for the small places and maybe $500 for bigger. Many are Bluetooth controlled now, too, and will send alerts and automatically increase filtration rates. For sensitive people even being indoors can be rough at the aqis you're posting.
It sucks not being to go outside. You really don't get used to it.
This is definitely affecting my sinuses, especially since I'm just getting over a cold.
basilosaurus, thanks for the rec - I was considering getting an air filter since 1) we use mini splits now and not the furnace, so putting some kind of air scrubber in the ducts won't work and 2) the air being dangerous now seems like a regular thing.
goldengirlz, the anxiety makes sense. And here I thought it was just because I'm trying to pack for an 8 day trip, starting tomorrow.

Same. We are in the Chicago suburbs. We walked 5 minutes into basketball practice on Tuesday night and my 10 year old said his eyes really hurt. I started coughing a decent amount. I also have allergies so that doesn't help. And last night I got a really bloody nose. It took forever to stop. I'm guessing related.
