We are upgrading DD's shower from a 30" to a 48". Do we want sliding doors or the swing out pivot door style? The stores don't have anything in stock for us to look at since it is a specialty size. I like that the sliding contain everything and there wont' be water on the floor but since it's still going to be a small shower I wonder if the sliding doors will be too hard to keep clean with needing to get inside the shower for cleaning.
I prefer a pivot over a sliding. OUrs is roughly the same size and we did pivot - the door can open in or out, so when we are getting out, we pull it inside and any water on the door drips into the shower, so that eliminates one of your concerns.
We just did 2 new shower doors, one pivot and one sliding. The pivot is on a 34” opening with a 29” wide door (opening close to it because hinge is wall mounted), that was a custom install by a glass company, no head rail, and the slider is on a 60” opening, purchased at HD. I’m not sure you could get a slider opening big enough on a 48”, because you are down to 24” (half the opening or slightly less with needed overlap). Not sure what the recommended width is, but 24” or less seems really tight.

We just did a bathroom reno. I wanted a slider and the contractor talked me into a pivot, and I'm glad he did. It's a really clean look with frameless. In particular I like that there's no "track" on the sill to gather yuck. I thought it would feel tight in there because it is a VERY small space but it doesn't, and the door swings in as well as out. I'll take a photo for you in a minute.
Our sliding door lasted 3 weeks before a drunk night led to it being shattered. Never again. We replaced with a pivot door.
How is a sliding door more likely to get broken than a hinge? I want more details!
Some piece was dislodged and once that happens, the glass is unstable. Once they touched each other, one panel shattered literally in my hands. The pivot door seems more stable.
Well I'm still waiting for the contractor to do the shower
But when/of it ever gets done I decided I'm going to do a swing out door but I am 99% sure I am going to have to go to our local glass shop and get a custom one. If my measurements are correct the door I could buy from lowes or home depot will hit the toilet when it swings out by about an inch. I'm going to wait until they have the new shower stall installed, hopefully I am wrong.
