we don’t actually think he’s been alive all this time, do we?
My hunch is that when they identify his body, the decomposition will be about a month ahead of everyone else on the plane. Convenient cover for what already took place.

Yeah, my first thought was something similar to this. Putin realized that everyone was catching on to all the deaths by leaping from windows or drowning in swimming pools, so they've come up with something new.
ETA: according to reports, the plane was actually registered to Prigozhin, and it was seen and videoed falling out of the sky with a wing missing. I saw a previous headline that it was shot down by defense (who knows why), so not sure if its that, or if the plane was sabatoged.

He's made public appearances and appeared on video as recently as several days ago.
His days were numbered as soon as he challenged Putin, but I don't know why they would need to initially cover up his death. Everyone has kind of been expecting it.

Why would they need to do all that and then "cover it up" by shooting down a plane?? Not exactly subtle.
This I would be willing to believe. I don't know much about warlording, but faking your own death seems like a good approach after staging a failed coup against a murderous dictator.

If so, Utkin is part of that plan as well.
I swear I saw a news article saying Surovikin was on the plane passenger list, too, but I can't find it again.
