I don't have time to read this right now, but does this story touch on the fact that Orca's apparently just have fad behaviors that we've documented before and have no explanation for...because that was amazing to me. another news story talked about a time they started wearing salmon draped on their heads for a while, and then just stopped again eventually.
like stealing boat rudders is the orca equivalent of eating tide pods
eta: to be clear, this is just one theory that is apparently out there in the marine biologist world. The other one being that the orcas are pissed off and seeing boats as hostile because humans suck.

This cracks me up. Maybe they have an Orca tiktok app they follow. OrcaTok

I saw on the news (maybe CNN) that they think maybe the orcas just like bumping into the rudders of boats, maybe like a game, or maybe because they like how it feels against their skin. They did mention the faddish behavior. Nature is so cool.
Having said that, I’m entertained by the “orcas just hate rich people” narrative. It is kind of humorous, true or not.

This was just on a This American Life episode - probably about 2/3 of the way through.

I was on Maui in March and the whales were hilarious and so fun to watch. They are so smart and in tune with boats. There were several that flipped and waved at us for 30 minutes at a time. It was one of the craziest things I’ve ever seen.
It would not shock me at all of this was a coordinated effort.
Sounds like it might be peer pressure from the other Orcas. Salmon hats are out, yacht attacks are in. Gotta keep up with the other cool Orcas.

Although as an OT, I have to applaud the sensory processing explanation.
When you contrast this with how gentle they tend to be with kayakers, it is like they know the ships are more threatening in terms of environmental impact and they are fighting back.

I just learned the other day that orcas are actually a type of dolphin, not a whale. So basically the smartest non-human species on the planet, I think.

So long, and thanks for all the fish!
Could there be a boat name that's so obviously this guy's?

My son brought home a book that had that tidbit of info in it just yesterday! I had no idea.

So Long and Thanks for all the Fish is a Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy book. Book 4 in the series.

One of my black and white cats has apparently read this thread and is ramming me for attention. This is a cat that really didn't care about attention until the last 3 days. She thinks she's an orca in the med now apparently.
So, thanks, p&ce! I'm now getting head butts everywhere all the time. Good thing she's cute and small.
