Appocalypse check list now has mobile a/c units with solar panels. Thankfully I'm acclimated to heat. It was 82 last night, and I had to grab a light zippie.
WaPo had this article this morning and it's put me in a not good place - wapo.st/3Q2Khke
I'm going to do the worst I told you so in history, but for all my time on this board I've been doing a countdown to now. This is exactly what the scientists have been predicting. This is exactly when (if not earlier) scientists said it would happen, and here we are. With nothing significant changed and a dying planet.
This summer has been brutal. In the mid-Atlantic we've gone through drought, flooding, heat, and air quality alerts. I'm not a summer/hot weather person in general, but it's been brutal to be outside (and sometimes inside) for many reasons.
This is the year of climate departure for Kingston I believe we have been being told. So although this is super hot, it wont be any better than this ever again. Terrifying
If anyone wants to read a depressing but very good novel about climate change written by a Caribbean women, Daylight Come by Diana McCaulay really hit me hard. It is available on Amazon - not sure where else

On a practical level, our infrastructure is so not ready for this.
I just had our electric company deny our permit to put in air conditioning because they said their transformer can’t handle the additional load, and we need to get in a (one to two year) queue to have it replaced. I am beside myself that we have to spend another year (or more!) sweating our asses off without it. (Although the truth is, on the hottest days of the year, it’s not uncommon for fucking PG&E to cut the power anyway.)
H also has a friend trying to put in solar and running into the same PG&E obstacles because their equipment is unable to handle all these requests. (It sounds ironic, but solar still requires you to have a certain amount of electrical capacity to install it.) I guess we’re not doing solar for another two years either. 🤷♀️
I always read these threads/articles, and I always try to reply. But my thoughts are so cynical that I wind up erasing whatever I wrote and just staying quiet.
We are not ready for this. As pp said, the infrastructure is what worries me the most. People around the world are already starving and suffering and dying from climate change. And first world countries just don't seem to care. We (general) just keep consuming.
Sometimes I get really depressed about it. Other times (like today) it makes me feel better about my debt (because I'll either die in the water wars or societal collapse will cancel it).
So I might as well splurge on expensive seafood for dinner tonight, right? /s

People here in the U.S. (and other highly developed countries) are also starving and suffering and dying from climate change and we still don't care. We're not a very caring people when it gets in the way of what we want.
We were talking about this over the 4th at my family's summer cottage. It's noticeably warmer now than when I was growing up. We've gone from sleeping under multiple blankets to needing fans in the windows at night. I can't imagine what it will be like in another 20 years.
