I’m backing down my hill. 😘 see also earlier in that thread where I mentioned liking small cars. I’m very average in limb length, but can reach halfway across the passenger seat in my car, barely across the center console in Hs truck. And maybe it’s really that cars are just unreasonably large. But I still think it’s ridiculous to need a touch screen for a glove box. Even if the passenger needs to get in there, a passenger not familiar would need the owner to explain it.
5 feet, short arms, drive a minivan and I can easily get napkins out of my glove box while at a red light. If I’m digging in there while driving it’s certainly for napkins.
The glove box has the paperwork stuff and manual, but that's it really. I have a small SUV and I can't safely reach it while driving so I never go in there. When I had a Honda Civic, I would go in there all the time to grab stuff. I don't remember what kind of stuff anymore, but I do remember easily being able to reach it.

No one mentioned the ACTUAL problem with the Tesla touchscreen which is that Tesla will periodically move things around when they push a software update to the car. It’s not hard to navigate once you know it (there’s a learning curve, but that’s true whenever you have to drive an unfamiliar car.) It’s that they keep changing the interface!
Also, it’s weird when it glitches and then you have to do a hard reset of your car like it’s a laptop or phone.
Glove box contains registration, proof of insurance, a state map, a nail file, a small notebook, and a pen. My arms are far too short to reach it while driving, so the console contains all the stuff I'm more likely to need quick access to
My corolla has a top and bottom glove box, top has all of my CDs (which I do reach into to change cds while driving, I have to reach forward a bit but am still upright/can see the road fine- I'm 5'3"). Bottom has car manual, probably napkins/wipes, extra fast food utensils, I think a mask for doing CPR (nurse), napkins, probably some other random stuff. Center console is small, has more napkins, bandaids, sunglasses, probably some other random stuff. I'm not frequently going in my glove box but definitely do, without issue. Maybe it's a small car thing?
Well, I guess I’m alone. I do drive small cars, and I’m not tall or anything, but can easy reach halfway across my car. Sure, I lean forward a bit. And would do it at a stoplight (which, I still could as driving because the car is on, you are in the driver seat, and it’s still considered driving for cell phone laws purposes). FWIW, the only time I’ve been in an accident, was when I was 17 and tapped someone at a stoplight.
As to the question, car manuals, tire pressure gauge, and I know there is a small box of Kleenex, because H is using it all the time. Normally, for a tissue, I use the ones in my car.
But really? No one here reaches around their car for things they shouldn’t? Never tried to grab something from the back seat? This a board full of hangs glued at 10 and 2 and always looking forward? I’m not saying this is a regular occurrence, but never in 20+ years of driving… never? Sure, maybe the glove box was an extreme example (still something I don’t want to be tapping around menus for - EVER).
Yeah, I’m so short and have such short arms I can’t use a drive up atm without unbuckling and hanging halfway out the car lol! No way I could reach for something while driving. It’s either within reach when I start driving or I have to pull over and put the car in park to get it. Not about being perfect or anything, just being really small.
I don’t think this many of us has short arms! Rather, I think we’re driving cars designed for men.

Masks I bought because I didn't have any on me back in 2022 and a small pack of tissues. That's it. (note, we don't carry car info in our cars in England) I have never had to get into the glove box while driving, so no idea.
Manual, registration, tire pressure gauge, fast food coupons, napkins, reusable straws (for my drive-thru iced coffee), and a slip leash in case we come across a stray dog along the side of the road.
I think the only thing we have not already mentioned is a stash of hair ties. My husband gets sick of the other three of us needing one when we are out so he starting keeping them in our cars.
My insurance and registration cards are in a little portfolio thing and I also have $20 emergency cash stashed in there. My car manual. A tire gauge. One of those window smasher/seatbelt cutter things. I think that might be it.
No, I drive a full size SUV and I'm 5'2", no way that I could reach my glove box while driving.

Garage door opener, napkins, car manual, emergency Werther's.
Yes I access it while driving to open and close the garage door or to grab a piece of candy. I have a small car (have always had a small car) and long arms and have never not been able to easily reach it.

Maybe? I do have really short arms, though. And a super tiny car (mini cooper).

When my hair was long enough, hair ties went around the gear shift.
Garage door opener, napkins, car manual, emergency Werther's.

I love that it's specifically emergency wethers.
Glove boxes in both cars have a stash of takeout/fast food napkins. I can only reach the Camry's while in the drivers seat. (but yes, I can reach it, and I do) Truck is too big. Which is why there are two boxes of tissues in the backseat, one on each side. (I have average US women's height and limb length)
I have the typical car registration, manuals and maybe a tire gauge. I also have a narcan kit my husband got from the health dept as well as our National Park Pass (it's a big lifetime review mirror hanging pass). My kids are constantly opening the glove box and messing around in there when waiting at the bus stop, so I try not to keep much inside it.
My dad always called it a jockey box, did anyone else's parents call it that?
Old CDs I had in my previous car that got tossed in to the glovebox when I traded my car in. I'm a little uncertain if my car (which I've had for 6 years) actually has a CD player.
I think also n95s and some napkins. Hopefully the manual iand tire pressure gauge.
Am I the only one that literally keeps gloves in mine? I have a spare pair of winter gloves and a couple pair of disposable surgical gloves from the Covid-era shopping with gloves on that I haven't taken out yet. Other than that, napkins, insurance and registration, a fabric headband, and an extra pair of sunglasses.

I have the car manual, small window scraper, package of wet wipes, tampons, allergy medicine, bandaids, probably some random pens/pencils at the bottom, safety glasses, not sure what else. and no idea the last time I opened it.... and I don't recall ever opening it while driving.
I do have a center area with tissues and mints that I will open while on the road.
Vehicle manual, hand sanitizer wipes, tissues, pens. Occasionally you'll find an auto maintenance receipt if i haven't taken it into the house yet.
What I definitely don't keep: anything with my home address on it, including license, registration, and insurance paperwork. I keep that in my phone/wallet and a spare copy with the spare tire in the very back of the vehicle in case I change purses and get pulled over. In Texas, they can verify all of that information by running your plates and license.
I have seen too many reports of people whose homes are broken into because their car was stolen, or garage opener and paperwork stolen out of their car.
On my navigation, I program the nearest major intersection as my home address in case my car is stolen and someone wants to try to break into my home using the programmable garage opener in the vehicle.
Oh - and no, i can't reach my glove box safely while driving. Everything there is accessed in Park or by a copilot.
Always a clean pair of underwear, you never know when you may need it!
Wouldn't that be more appropriate in the Nancy Drew prepared-for-all-occasions suitcase in the back of the car? ;-)
that's where I kept mine back when my car was just my own and I had a lot more adventures. I kept a few pair of undies, a hairbrush, a toothbruch, a random assortment of snacks, some sort of alcohol, and a corkscrew. (the foldy kind, not the kind with two levers, which meant I also had a tiny knife)
rubytue I am with you; I can reach the glove box pretty easily (tall and gangly) and I keep tissues in there for emergencies, so I reach there while driving if needed. I also reach behind me to put garbage in the garbage bag or if @@@@ my kid drops something and I can reasonably reach it.
My peppermints, masks, hair ties, gum, etc all live in my center console. Sun glasses have their own drop down spot. In the trunk is the emergency stuff--other than the window smasher which is in my side door.

I don't think i had the alcohol, but I had a multifunction knife tool, water, sanitizing wipes, and feminine products along with undies, a brush, toothpaste/brush, and snacks. Also a pair of pants and a white button up shirt. Nancy Drew was my hero.
I am impressed with how adult so many of you are. I've never thought of tissues - brilliant!
I have several years of expired paperwork for registration/insurance, a tire gauge, and the name tag/bowtie/flashlight I need for when I volunteer usher, since I tend to forget those otherwise. I think that's about it?
I am 5'9 and drive a Honda Civic so I can easily reach the glovebox, but have never had any reason to while driving.
ETA: I forgot, I also have a spare pair of shitty sunglasses and a few dollars to give to random homeless/window washers that come up to the car in my center console.
Car manual, insurance card (we don’t have to carry registration here… I think) and then a bunch of COVID detritus. A couple masks, and alcohol wipes that have been there for over three years. I bought them for the car when I was driving a girls trip six hours on March 7. Like, we knew what COVID was, but I thought some sanitizing wipes would save us from getting sick at a live podcast show? Nuts.
Yeah, I can’t reach it unless I lean over the console. It’s not a big car, I just also have t-Rex arms.
