OPM finally gave the go ahead to agencies to hold potential shutdown meetings this afternoon.
:record scratch: hold on - I’ve never worked in govt at any level, not just fed. But are you saying you weren’t allowed to PLAN for the shutdown until the last weekday afternoon? That probably blows my mind more than any other facet of this shitshow.
But also I came in to see if anyone knows anything about that fire alarm. Keeping an open mind until I see some facts but false alarms are baaad bad. Does anyone else have info?
I honestly wish they would have just shut down this week vs. solve nothing and do nothing for the next 45 days, and threaten a shut down before the holidays.

Nope. Even yesterday my office didn’t know who was essential.
I do work for a lot of mediocre white men at the higher levels, so I wasn’t surprised.

Oh, no, my upper level management had been planning for about two weeks, kudos to them. We just weren’t allowed to have formal discussions with employees until OPM gave the go ahead.

I’ve been saying this to friends all day. I want off this roller coaster.
Except McConnell said Senate Republicans won’t pass it.
ETA: trying to find the link. DH read it in an article while we were at a soccer game.
I think that was the Senate version he was talking about. I don’t see why the Senate won’t pass the new House version.
Not sure which McConnell was talking about, but the House bill doesn't have any funding for Ukraine in it which has been a big thing in the Senate. Will any senators basically vote to shutdown the US govt over funding for another country when it comes down to it? I don't know.
ETA: looks like the Senate vote is at least delayed over Ukraine funding.
I agree, I wish they would just hammer out an actual budget instead of kicking it down the road at this point.

All of this. I would sooner furlough now than in 45 days. I am not confident that 45 days is enough for them to get their shit together and actually solve anything.

“Representative Matt Gaetz, the far-right Republican from Florida, said on Sunday that he would move this week to remove Speaker Kevin McCarthy from his leadership post, promising to follow through on weeks of threats to oust him for working with Democrats to keep the government funded.”

I think that will be one major difference between now and mid-November. Are they going to have the power to oust him, or does he survive this? Either way it will change what happens next time.

I think one of the big questions is do Dems vote to keep McCarthy.

Because he's shown he'll compromise? Maybe, but given the major gulf in policy beliefs it still seems like it would be smarter for them to vote for a D like they did originally.

Signed, Not a political strategist
This is it. I’d be shocked if a single D votes for McCarthy. They will vote for a Dem and Jeffries has great control over his caucus.

I know I could probably google, but does this mean we'll end up in another stalemate like at the beginning of the term? With R's split between McCarthy and whatever clown the others put up and D's to Jeffries? Is the thought that then the Rs will HAVE TO come around to rally around McCarthy again?
Is it time to resurrect this thread? Just over a week to go, and it doesn't seem like the House has made any meaningful progress on funding bills or a CR.

I’ll admit I haven’t been paying much attention the last week or so as I’ve had a ton of other things going on. Have they even been working on anything?
We had a meeting with our Director yesterday and learned that our agency has about a week and a half of carry over funding so it’ll be business as usual for us for a bit.
I've heard they were working on a clean CR, however; 3 republicans have already said they would not vote for it so it would need democratic support. I'm not even sure if they are going to bring it to the floor.
I thought for sure we were heading for a shutdown last time but they passes a CR until now so I wouldn't be surprised if they get something passed at the last minute.
My good friend’s citizenship interview is scheduled next Monday. I made the mistake of mentioning it last night (we were at dinner and half the table is feds). Freaked him out.
Sentiment of people I talk to is similar to melissa ’s. Basically, that no one is going to shut down before the holidays in an election year. I don’t know. Not throwing out any guess. But expecting a crazy week (I’m off today)
One thing I’ve noticed is a whole lot less press about the possibility. And there is part of me that thinks if the WP isn’t up in arms, their sources as suggesting another CR is highly likely.

USCIS may be (in part) funded, in part, the fees immigrants pay to file paperwork. There is a chance that interviews like this won't stop immediately if there is a shutdown, as they (in theory) are paid for with filing fees.
