My good friend’s citizenship interview is scheduled next Monday. I made the mistake of mentioning it last night (we were at dinner and half the table is feds). Freaked him out.
Sentiment of people I talk to is similar to melissa ’s. Basically, that no one is going to shut down before the holidays in an election year. I don’t know. Not throwing out any guess. But expecting a crazy week (I’m off today)
One thing I’ve noticed is a whole lot less press about the possibility. And there is part of me that thinks if the WP isn’t up in arms, their sources as suggesting another CR is highly likely.
USCIS may be (in part) funded, in part, the fees immigrants pay to file paperwork. There is a chance that interviews like this won't stop immediately if there is a shutdown, as they (in theory) are paid for with filing fees.
Wow! That would be most excellent. I mean, he has a green card and I reminded him it’s not like we’d kick him out tomorrow. But this could make him relax somewhat.

I didn't find anything from this year, but this is what USCIS put out in 2018. Basically, most services continue as normal, with a handful of exceptions, mostly those in which the US government is paying for the service (so normal naturalization interviews, which are paid for with the filing fee, should be fine). www.uscis.gov/archive/lapse-in-federal-funding-does-not-impact-most-uscis-operations
Do you happen to know if they still do a separate swearing in? He seems to think it might be the same day.
I've always been under the impression that the oath of naturalization tends to be a bit of a "show" event. The sort of thing that they get a group together for it, folks can invite close family and friends to witness, etc. To me, that feels like it wouldn't happen the same day as the interview, but I could be mistaken. I've never naturalized.

Yeah, see, that’s what I thought. And I’d been thinking I’d go. But then he said he thinks it could happen then and they don’t do the ceremony for show anymore. Maybe it’s like college graduation, you can elect to get the diploma at the ceremony or just mailed to you. Anyway, I want to put a date on the gift, and I guess that’s going to have to wait until the date is confirmed.
I had a lot of emails sent in the last week about a shut down. Versus before the CR we got like one email on Friday. So I felt like there may be a shut down coming.
Did anyone else get the video explaining how a government shut down happens with it being a big scary monster and being like "every year there's just no way to know if the government will shut down or not!"

It's radio silence at my agency, however; everything I'm reading is making it sound like a shut down is not likely to occur. What are you hearing?

Just a lot of general emails of making sure your on the recall(?) list to get notified about work, furlough resources, that video of how a government shut down happens... Just random general stuff like that that comes from HR. I'm a contractor and only work one weekend day a week so I don't hear/talk to anyone with any real knowledge just all the general all agency emails that go out.

I have not seen this, nor heard of it until your post, but in my head based on our other trainings I can only imagine it’s a piece of art.
We got an email this morning about timesheets and all this jazz about timesheets before a shutdown. And today I’m seeing fat more coverage than even yesterday. Which makes me nervous. I guess the house votes today on the two tiered plan. And if that fails, then I’ll start panicking.

lol it was certainly something. It just killed me that the overall tone of it was *big shrug* no possible way to have a functional government where shutdown isn't imminent every year. Just up to random chance!

Yes, we were told this afternoon to validate timesheets by COB Thurs.

We were told the same thing but because of the holiday next week not the threat of a government shutdown.
Funds would expire for military and veterans programs, agriculture and food agencies, and the departments of Transportation and Housing and Urban Development on Jan. 19. They would expire for the State, Defense, Commerce, Labor, and Health and Human Services departments, among others, on Feb. 2. The bill passed the House under a process called “suspension of the rules,” which required two-thirds of the chamber to approve the measure because some far-right Republicans refused to allow it to proceed under a lower threshold without spending reductions.
The Senate passed a stopgap measure last night, so, after Biden’s signature, this weekend’s potential shutdown has been averted. Money runs through Jan 19 and Feb 2 depending on agency so I’m sure we’ll reconvene in a few short weeks… apple.news/AiAnLHfN9Tvm5iVFWVbbDAA
