It's early but I was just at Joanne's and it's halloween-riffic in there.
So! Feeling energized to make a plan with enough time to execute. What are people doing this year for grownup costumes?
My office does a costume contest and people really commit to it. But I always draw a complete blank when it comes to ideas for myself for it. Anybody have any suggestions?
Double bonus points for something current events witty (mild political content ok, progressive crowd) and/or transportation related. Last time I asked this question here (in 2019) I got the awesome suggestion to be Mrs. Frizzle, which I did and loved. It's got to be something I can sit in comfortably for a day of desk work, so ideally not a cardboard structure or anything that I have to take off and on.
There's no plan for a coordinated department costume or family costume for me this year, so the world is my oyster.
ohhh, can I do something mocking Elon Musk's asinine tesla tunnels that won't go away? the half baked notion that just popped into my head is that somehow I'm a subway dressed up as a Boring Company tunnel. Or like a hyperloop pod that's actually just a fucking tesla? No idea how to make that happen...feels too complicated...
I usually like to do something current events themed but the last few years I haven’t done anything. My only criteria is that the costume is easy and comfortable. I have done:
Fake news (I found a sweater and leggings that had news print on them and then I used a sticker that said FAKE)
Voter fraud (roll of I Voted stickers and I had like 50 of them all over my normal clothing)
Women in a Binder (while back when what’s his name claimed to have plenty of women- a whole binder of them, built a binder out of poster board to wear)
I went through a pun stage where I was a ceiling fan (shirt, hat, and sign that all said Go Ceiling) and I did travel bug (a shirt with the world on it and a lady bug mask)
I’m working HARD on convincing DH to be Ken and I’ll be Barbie. Maybe president Barbie. I alresdy own a long furry vest thing so really his costume is almost done already.
Ohhh...I maybe have an idea. I could be engineer barbie. Which is extra funny if you know me well enough off board. Every single man I work with, including my husband who is also an engineer, wears a patterned button down and a pair of khaki's or navy slacks every.single.day.
What if I thrift a pink gingham/check button-down, wash the blue and pink hair chalk out of my harley quinn wig and restyle it, and...then I have to figure out the rest of the outfit. Would barbie wear kahakis?? (would I? I don't own any right now...) Shoes? Oh, I could put a barbie sticker on one of my hardhats just in case somebody doesn't get the joke! Just really nail it home.
this is the typical civil engineer look:
except we don't walk around in hardhats in the office obviously.
wawa, I feel like civil engineer Barbie could get by with jeans (instead of buying khakis). That could even fit the "jobsite" image better if you're going to do the helmet with sticker.
I don't know about shoes. Do you have an old pair of sneakers you could spray paint pink to further the Barbie theme?

I like this idea! I might do it too. Bonus, I have a pink polo (polos are more the uniform at my workplace) and a blond wig already.
All the civil engineer dudes I know wear steel toe work boots with that outfit, and dark wash jeans. Sometimes they spice things up with a Patagonia jacket or vest.
We are going to be in Japan (Osaka) over Halloween and I’m STOKED. No ideas about costumes yet, but that might depend on what/where we go to celebrate and whether the theme is more spooky or character-based.

It's been so many years since I've experienced Halloween. I'm jealous. A few years ago I "celebrated" at a Hilton bar in Myanmar. They were so proud of their spider decorations. No one had costumes, though. Maybe some bunny ears or similar. It was nearly empty, but I loved their effort

We made some plans last night (burlesque show at the Can-Can) and have settled on Weird Barbie and Allan. I have a feeling I'll get a lot of mileage out of this costume!
I've wanted to be LiMu Emu for a couple years and haven't planned well enough to execute. Short sleeve yellow shirt, blue tie, black or brown tulle skirt, black tights, some kind of paper beak, and aviator glasses.
