Hurricane Hillary to hit S. California

Is everyone there freaking out? They have already had so much rain, snow, melt this year….


Hurricane Hilary, a Category 3 storm, is expected to bring “catastrophic and life-threatening flooding” to Mexico and parts of the southwestern United States.
The storm is now moving faster than originally forecast, meaning it's expected to impact the US earlier in the day Sunday. More than a year’s worth of rain could fall in areas of California, Nevada and Arizona.
If Hilary makes landfall in California as a tropical storm, it will be a rare occurrence – the first such storm there in nearly over 80 years

I’m not freaking out, I’m just trying to figure out what to expect. Normally our news is so over dramatic about weather but I feel like right now they’re being very “eh, a tropical storm is coming.” It’s very weird.

I’m inland, pretty far from the coast so my local news isn’t recommend any type of preparations.

We’re probably just going to get some winds and a dumping of rain.

This is interesting because I’m at the coast and they are saying on our local news that it will be worse inland than at the coast. But I am in LA and it looks like the projections show it going inland after San Diego, so maybe you are south of me.

We have all the backup batteries charging and we put away stuff on our patio and cleaned our our drains. My teen is at his dad’s near Long Beach this weekend and has to work at 1 tomorrow near my house. I am trying to convince him to come home tonight so he isn’t on the freeway tomorrow morning.

My husband works for an OC beach FD - they are all hands on desk, everyone is being called off of PTO/vacation (unless you can show proof of a non-refundable, paid flight). While it may not "hit" hard, we are not prepared for the amount of very quick moisture we're going to get on dried out land that cannot absorb it quickly enough. Add in some solid wind and there is going to be chaos. Flash floods, trees will be going down, electric lines going out, people thinking they can drive through "a little bit" of water, etc.

We're in the IE and the path was originally directly over our area. It's shifting further east on the modeling in the last few hours: zoom.earth/storms/hilary-2023/#map=precipitation/model=icon

It looks like the storm path is right through San Gabriel Valley right now. We are a bit west and I’m watching closely because right now we are outside of it, but not by much.

I am down in coastal SD and our rainfall estimates dropped by an inch overnight. We brought cushions inside, located/staged flashlights and are charging all of our powerbanks.

I’m less worried for us today than I was yesterday.

Eta: our news this morning didn’t seem overly concerned. I think mountains and deserts are going to be pummeled.

Stay safe everyone! It’s very surreal no matter how much I read about it to hear of a hurricane hitting Southern California.

Without panicking, if I were there I would just make sure I have extra batteries, charged electronics, gas in the car, some cash on hand, and any loose items outside should probably be stored away or tied down if possible. I’d be most nervous about power outages and high winds. Can’t speak for specific terrain issues though, so if you’re in an area that could flood I’d take protective steps with that too.

We went ahead and brought everything in from outside. I also gathered up all the flashlights and lanterns and have them in a basket in the kitchen.

DH will be at work, assuming they stay open. So far all the communication he’s received is that they’re currently not planning to close.

We get sustained 45-60 mph winds for 2-4 weeks every year, so I'm not sure if there's much else we can do apart from what we already do.

Ironically enough my high school friend is visiting San Diego from New Orleans (her home for the past 25 years including Katrina and Ida) this week. Her flight home on Sunday was canceled by Southwest. Definitely one of those… I never thought this would happen scenarios. You know it’s real when the navy is moving destroyers out of San Diego bay and the airlines are cancelling all flights.

I am deploying my earthquake kit, moving plants off of walls and generally trying to find ways to stay busy indoors for Sunday/ Monday. Just hoping our neighborhood trees survive this. Fortunately no Eucalyptus in our area.

I got deployed by my companies emergency response. I have been working 12 hour shifts since Friday and will go at least until Monday. It’s been really interesting but I am exhausted and the storm hasn’t even hit us yet. My company has meteorologists staffed so it has been fun talking to them - they are really excited because of how unusual this is.

It seems that all my friends in Southern CA/LA do not see it as a big deal. My boss even went home to LA where his family is for a concert this weekend.
I think that the only people freaking out are people on TikTok from places that get real hurricanes. Lots of videos from people in Texas and similarly affected places with how to prep videos. Californians videos are pretty, eh.

I was definitely expecting more wind before it actually pushes through. We’ve had steady rain all day, but its kind of a nothing burger so far.

Looks like between 3-6 may be the worst if it but we shall see. Seems like it weakened a lot over Mexico.

Seems much like other hurricane experiences - you have to prep for the worst, and in many cases you get nothing, while in others the impact is massive.

I've seen some pretty crazy flooding in videos from Vegas, and there are some similar updates on The Weather Channel weather.com/news/news/2023-08-20-hilary-live-updates-hurricane-tropical-storm-california

TWC will definitely show the most sensational impact - which for this is likely flash flooding incidents in various desert areas.

I was a bit excited for rain but looks like it’s turning east and will avoid the Bay Area and Sacramento. Probably for the best. I remember when that rare thunderstorm hit in August 2020 and the lightning strikes sparked weeks of wildfires.

The hills in my town caught fire during that thunderstorm, it was awful and scary.

Those fires sucked. I was actually on a hike at the top of a mountain and watching lightening strike.. and then spending weeks trapped indoors to avoid the smoke and not being able to go anywhere (like movies or bowling) because everything was shut down due to covid.
