Right now this table has in leaf in it to seat 6. If STBX ever moves out I’m going to take out the leaf so the table is round and seats 4. I was thinking about putting a rug under the table but is that verboten? I don’t have small kids so I’m not overly concerned about a mess. Thoughts?
I know styled photos usually have rugs under tables, but I'm not a fan. Even in a house of tidy eaters there is still more potential to get a spill near the table than most other places. I also think the dimensions and flow of your dining area would work against you. The area where the dog is standing looks like a pass through that is probably well traveled and a rug would end in that space, posing a tripping hazard. If that end sees a lot of foot traffic, the rug will be worn down/dirtier on that side. (This would annoy me. It may not be annoying to everyone.) There are rug size guides on Pinterest based on the size of your table. I would check those out and use painters tape to mark the area so you can see visually how it would fit.
When DH suggested putting a rug under the kitchen table I was initially against the idea but agreed to try it to see how we liked it and I’ll admit, I like it more than I thought I would. It looks nice, feels better on the feet than the hard floor, and prevents chair scraping (you get used to lifting the chair a bit as you push it in). I was worried about crumbs but I have a little Dustbuster in the corner that I use under DS’s chair here and there. If you get one, I’d aim for a nice flat low-pile one.
I wouldn't put a rug in the work area of the kitchen, but under a table seems like a reasonable place to put one. I have never put a rug under a dining table because hardwood seems easier to keep clean.
I'd also either want the rug to be small enough that the chairs never go on it OR big enough that when you pull a chair out to sit, it doesn't leave the rug.
I like the look but have abandoned it for practical reasons....for now. We had the spill issues, but worse, our rug kept curling a bit on the side so it was a trip hazard. Probably a way to fix that but I just gave up for now.
I think it would look nice in your space - you've got a lot of dark wood w/the table and floor and it would lighten it a bit (in a lighter color or jute).

our space isn't conducive for a rug and in your case I would probably not put a rug either - seems like it could get in the flow of traffic from the door. We have a rug in the dining room - but not the eat in kitchen area.
We had a round table w/4 chairs and a rug under it in our last house. The kitchen had wood floors and even with little feety things on the chairs, the floors were getting scratched by the chairs. So we added the rug. It was an indoor/outdoor thin rug and it served it's purpose well and was easy to clean.
I like the look, and think it would like nice there. I wouldn't personally put a rug under a frequently used kitchen/dining table, but if you're not worried about spills then I think it's totally fine! I agree with the suggestion to make sure that the chair legs don't get easily caught on it.

We had a rug under an infrequently used to eat on table, but part of the rug was in a high foot-traffic area, and that part of the rug got trashed while the other part stayed pristine, and that drove me nuts even though it was a low pile rug (it was not indoor/outdoor though). I flipped it once to put the trashed area against the wall that couldn't be seen and got another year out of it, and then we moved and I threw it out. If I were to do it again, I'd be tempted to try an indoor/outdoor rug based on other responses here though.
I have this rug under our kitchen table and really love it. It's funny to hear the strong feelings for no rug because I think I feel just as strongly about yes, there absolutely needs to be a rug under our table. I've always replaced rugs periodically to update decor. I'm usually ready for something new by the time they start feeling/looking less than new - maybe 3-6 years, depends on where they're located in my house.
