This story caught my eye because my grandparents used to have a summer lake house in Bellaire.
Dog breaks out of animal shelter repeatedly in order to sneak into a nearby nursing home and curl up on a couch there. Gets adopted by the facility's staff and has been living there since 2017. Recently recognized as "resident of the month" (the pic in the WaPo story is great). His name is Scout.
From the WaPo piece:
"Scout was staying at the Antrim County Animal Shelter in Bellaire, Mich., when he started sneaking out to Meadow Brook Medical Care Facility — a nursing home across the street — in the middle of the night.
“He climbed the chain-linked kennel,” said Heather Belknap, the shelter director, explaining that Scout — who weighs about 65 pounds — was indoors, and scaled a fence to get outside. “There’s a six-foot solid vinyl fence around the dog kennels. He jumped over that fence.”

What an escape artist! I love that he had his dedicated spot too.
During high school, my boyfriend's cat would leave during the day and lounge on a chair in the lobby of the Four Points hotel that was 4 blocks away. Every single day. It took them months to figure out where he went, and the hotel staff apparently let him. During university I worked across the street from the hotel and sometimes I would stop in and give Jeff a good chin scratch!
Omg I love this!! We have a dog named Scout plus another one that looks just like this Scout, but younger.
I know first hand how a pet can make a difference for someone who is sick, elderly, depressed, etc.
This made my week for sure, I also went ahead and bought some treats from their Amazon list.
My dog stayed with my mil after her cancer dx until it became more burden than help (about a year). And when I was in hospital for about 5 days I joyfully welcomed the visit from dog and handler. I was bored out of my skull, so I got a human to talk to and a dog in my tiny hospital bed. I love everything about this story because of those experiences.
I do wonder if there are concerns about fear or allergy. A resident dog is different than someone coming to your room asking if you'd like a visit.
