Over 600 dead. Likely many more to follow as they get to more remote regions.
I spent a few weeks there last winter and made some good friends. Thankfully they're safe, although pretty traumatized I think. I've been through similar magnitude (6.9) that also hit around midnight, so I can definitely empathize with that fear, the disorientation. And I could mostly trust my Japanese home wouldn't crumble (death toll was 1, and he was driving). My heart goes out to them. Such a wonderful place

This is absolutely heartbreaking. The death toll is going to be much, much higher. This is the largest earthquake there in 120 years and the buildings just are not constructed well enough to sustain an earthquake of this magnitude.
"Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies-"God damn it, you've got to be kind.”
