the kids are off school today and tomorrow is cleaning day (i.e. our cleaner is coming) so everybody needs to straighten up their spaces before bedtime tonight. i have been sitting here at my desk in the basement trying to work just yelling "is your room done?" "well are you working on it?" "well then get back to it!" up the stairs every 30 minutes fo rthe last 6 hours and I'm about to lose my actual mind. All they have to do is deal with the laundry, books and toys scattered around so the cleaning people can vacuum, dust and strip the beds.
Both children have even taken procrastination naps as I discovered when it went suspiciously quiet up there. JUST FINISH CLEANING YOUR GODDAMN ROOMS OMG.
Also I have always been really gung ho on not forcing my kids to eat when they aren't hungry, but giving them food whenever they are hungry and not worrying about meal times or snack times or anything, and just generally encouraging them to honor their body's hunger cues. I've either done too good a job, or something is really wrong with my kid. Shorti got sick a week ago and was vomiting for three days (strep. which I didn't know could cause that, but apparently it can) and she's been puke free since thursday but her appetite just won't come back, so she's still barely eating. But it feels like a viscious cycle because she's not eating because she's not really hungry, but she's not eating so her system is just stuck in this weird no intake cycle and not giving normal cues (this is my theory anyway). But the idea of just choking down something bland and boring for the sake of putting food in her belly is apparently totally crazy to her and she won't do it.
She's getting to the point where she's really emotional and weirdly weepy and tired and I'm like, YES BECAUSE YOU'VE PROBABLY EATEN 1000 CALORIES IN THE PAST WEEK! I've been pushing stuff that should be super easy to just nibble out and eat enough of to get a meals worth of calories in - juice, jelly, apple sauce, crackers, toast, smoothies, noodles, rice (she LOVES rice) and I can get about 3 bites in her before she makes yuck face and wont eat anymore. I've offered junk fast food (nuggets and fries). Peas. (her favorite veggie) meatballs, assorted sandwiches, chicken tacos, various fruits, etc etc etc. a few bites max and then meh. She spit out a bite of cheese this morning because "her belly didnt want it". Oh and she's got wicked gas pains, but I always expect that after a stomach bug type event. She's never a picky eater so this is totally throwing me for a loop.
I'm running out of ideas. Do we need to go back to the doctor? wtf is this?
wawa - did she take antibiotics for the strep? That can throw off people's GI system, too. Maybe try a probiotic?
she's still on antibiotics. So yeah, I'd expect some GI upset, but the complete and total lack of appetite is what has me a tizz.
At this point I’d be offering popsicles, ice cream and Gatorade just to get some calories into them. My kids won’t say no to those things! But yeah, I feel like sometimes after being sick it takes a while for the appetite to come back. I’d focus on keeping her hydrated.

We went through this with DD over the cycle. It turned into a vicious cycle. Then she wasn’t pooping which wasn’t helped by not eating anything. I did bring her to the doctor expecting them to just tell her to eat but they actually sent us for an abdominal X-ray. I hope she starts eating again soon.
wawa - when either my kid or myself gets in that cycle, baked goods help. Specifically banana bread or cupcakes.
My random is that 5th grade is kicking my family’s ass. The amount of work is just so much more. Plus social studies has been become a struggle - every kid we know is doing poorly. I’m not one to blame teachers for my kid’s performance but at what point do you wonder why no kid in class is doing well?
just to report back...the pukes came back. Doctor is now slightly stumped but not yet concerned, and we've got zofran on board and she actually ate a whole lunch's worth of food!
she frustratingly thinks the pedialyte with the probiotics in it is nasty and won't drink it, so that was a waste of money. But she ate food! and is drinking plenty of water.
