I have today and tomorrow off-I’m happy to just loaf around and do nothing. My boss asked me and 3 other coworkers yesterday if we’d want to be part of a pilot program to open up live chat with the sales reps. I’ve been in my new position for less than two months so I feel like I can’t be screwing up if I was asked, right? I’m actually really excited to be a part of something like this-it sounds like a very cool addition to my job.

Today is off to a shitty start. Monday I walked halfway to school with DS and he just flat out refused to walk any further, saying he didn't feel well. Tried to talk him out of it, but to no avail and let him stay home.
Today it's happening again. 5 minutes before the bus came (he usually takes bus, but sometimes we walk), he starts crying how he wants me to pick him up early and has a meltdown about it. Then throws a fit as the bus is pulling up and we are outside. Just for all to see... He's now in him room and I'm hoping in 15 minutes we can walk to school without incident.
Yes, Wednesday, despite me using the Thursday spot in my pill organizer this morning. Wishful thinking.
Doggo is not adjusting to H’s new work schedule well. She is not a morning dog, I am not a morning person. We are not doing well. I’ve been early to work so far this week, which never happens. And she isn’t even doing her morning 💩 walk. Just plain old refusing the leash, and runs to her crate. And we let me crate be her safe space, so when she runs in there, we don’t pull her out. This morning I actually closed the door on it (which we only do when the doorbell rings), becaus dammit, if you are going to hide in there instead of 💩, damn if I’m letting you play the game where you bounce at me and then run away.
H on the other hand is really seeing the benefits of a union, county job (cc jinkies ). He was telling me all this stuff last night - I get a $180 allowance for new boots! It’s a 4 hour minimum per task if you get called in! We stop at 3. Period. You need all sorts of permission for OT! He has worked construction for so long and they worked him to, almost literally, death. So it’s day 3 and he is feeling pretty good about his choices.
edit: oh, someone here hates doggo, right. Oh well… it’s annoying, she (the dog) is annoying to me. I’m good with my word choice.

Any Maineiacs here? I am going to Portland ME in two weeks for a short trip with my bff for her birthday. We’re taking the Amtrak from Boston and will be staying Thursday-Saturday. Any food recommendations? I was looking up spa stuff to do too-like a couples massage or pedicure or something-of you know about anything like that I’m all ears.
I’m already planning on sampling some of Maine’s finest cannabis (seriously so many people here in MA won’t shut up about how ME is much better quality and pricing).
I WFH at an online school but am required to go to an in-person event a couple times a year to build school community and see people face to face etc. Mine is 45 minutes away so between getting ready and driving I'll be gone most of the day. I am actually excited to go stand at a park for 2 hours and then go to Trader Joe's after and shirk all of my responsibilities.
Tonight is DS's back to school open house. I volunteered to sit at a table for the parent teacher group for 30 minutes because they were begging for people. Not really looking forward to that, but looking forward to then meeting DS's teacher and seeing his classroom. He seems excited about it.
I am honestly looking forward to a possible furlough. I'm not essential at this point (yay!) and could use a day or two of nothing. This place is really grinding on all of us right now.
I painted E's ceiling last Saturday and on Sunday felt awful. My body is really struggling with energy because of my other stuff. It's annoying because these are not things that were uncommon before. DH was asking me about painting her room and if I could do all 4 walls on my own in one day (love him, but he cannot paint to save his life) and I literally was in tears because I don't know. Her room isn't even that big, but my body is just a mess.
I was supposed to have online therapy this morning with new therapist. They never showed, so that's awesome.
I'm taking a half day today for no real reason. I have a hair appointment at 12 to get highlights, but I also think that I'm going to chop my hair. In June I had like 6 inches cut off but it is still below my bra. Today I think I'm going to chop it up to my collar bones. We'll see. I still have a few hours to chicken out.

I'm off from work for the rest of the week, which I really need, my parents are coming to visit. Dad wants to help with my new house, which is very sweet but at nearly 85 with a disease that impacts balance, I need to come up with a list of safe tasks. I'm spending the morning cleaning up, I've been so busy trying to get the new house ready, I've neglected my current living space.
I also got an email from my homeowners insurance that they want me to replace the roof, no timeline, no details, so it looks like I'll be shopping for new insurance too. Why can't they tell you before you actually buy the house they have an issue? They had nearly 6 weeks from the time I applied to closing and they wait until I have actually bought the apparently uninsurable house. My inspector said the roof was good, 10-15 years left on it. I don't have nearly enough left in savings for a roof replacement right now. Hopefully, it will be good enough for one of the new companies.
I talked to dd’s teacher yesterday, and she’s doing just fine! Doesn’t seem distracted and isn’t distracting kids around her. Such a relief that the meds seem to be helping.
I’m also prepared for a shutdown. I have a few projects to get done.
rubytue - that would be me. Use whatever words work for you. I'm just some stranger on the internet (not so) silently judging you...
😘 well, if I called her by name, it wouldn’t be obviously a dog (she has a people name, though much more common in the 50s). And I felt like using a proper name in that context. Judge away. We are family here. 😂
plutosmoon, can you find out why they want you to replace the roof? If the inspection said it was good for another 10 years, it doesn't add up that insurance would want it replaced.
We were debating about going to Cape May for the Lima Bean Festival next week but it seems unseasonably cool and there isn’t a ton of info about the event online from previous years so what if we end up paying to rent a house with the dogs to be cold and go to a not great festival?
There are some other niche festivals happening closer to home this weekend and next we could go to but they wouldn’t be a real getaway, just a long day trip. But at least we could pivot if the weather is bad and not be stuck in a beach town in the off season with not much to do.
Anyway, now my goal is to figure out what we can do on this week we took off.

Do you mind if I ask what disease your dad has that's impacting his balance? My dad (73) has had balance issues for years, and no doctor has been able to determine what's causing it.

The email they sent was super vague, so I need to call later today. I have state farm and in MA I have to deal with their call center, which is a pain. This might just be the push I need to get a local company. I am truly baffled by the email.

Also, loafing around sounds sublime. I've been thinking a three-day stretch, while the kids are in school, is what I need: one day to socialize, one day to tackle a couple home projects, and one day to do absolutely nothing. The perfect PTO trifecta!

This is about as random as I could possibly be, but I really wish the world would outlaw retractable leashes. They are so bad for dogs, and so unsafe. I was dropping the kids off to school, and there was a dog in the middle of an intersection, and I thought it was loose. It was probably 10 dog lengths in front of its owner, who was still on the sidewalk on her phone. That’s a good way to get your dog hit, lady. I hate them so much I even bring my own leash to the clients that use them. I’m cranky today!

I've had Amica for years and have been happy with them.

OMG, agreed. They're often so skinny you can't even tell the dog is on a leash. Which also makes me think it wouldn't take much for one to snap. I've seen dogs lunge into traffic on a flexi and I don't know how they didn't get hit.
rubytue yay!!! I am so happy for him and for you. My H worked in residential HVAC for 20 years before making the switch, so I get it! My H calls it his retirement job LOL. I hope your H enjoys all the perks and the slower pace of the day.

I agree! They are the worst. My husband and I both have big scars on our knees from when other people’s dogs on retractable leashes got wrapped around our legs because their owners weren’t paying attention. Two separate instances! They just cut through the skin like a knife.
They are dangerous in so many ways to everyone including their own dogs!

He has Huntington's Disease (HD). It rare in general and especially rare for it to hit so late in life, but his defective gene repeat is in what they call the gray zone of symptoms. At his age, they threw the genetic test as more of a rule out confirmation. The doctor was pretty surprised, but looking back he's probably had mild symptoms for about 10 years.
Most people with HD develop symptoms in their 40s or 50s, but gray zone folks hit later. He also has swallowing issues, mild cognitive issues (impulsiveness mostly) and some uncontrollable movement (chorea).
It doesn't hurt to test for it especially if he has other symptoms like chorea. I hope they can find the cause of your dad's issues, but I also hope it's not HD, it's a real shit disease with no great treatment options, it is slowly progressive and terminal.

Oh, they snap really easily. You honestly don’t even have to try that hard. Just one rough tug while the dog is pulling the other way and it’s done.

I have a big scar on my ankle from getting tangled in a long nylon leash.... I can only imagine how much worse it is getting tangled in elastic!
I spent all day yesterday switching the bed in my DD's room from two platform beds that were rigged up to work as one larger bed to a beautiful antique wood full sized bed. This has been a long process of bringing the bed from my grandfathers house in CT, cleaning out her room, disassembling her old beds, and getting a new mattress/sheets/duvet.
So of course she was in hysterics at bed time crying because she hates her new bed. Wonderful.

So far vacation has been fabulous! Beach, pool, resting, a 3rd set of hands with my mom here. The baby is still sleeping at 9:45 am and I’m enjoying breakfast by the pool (don’t worry my partner is with her, we are not doing the video monitor hotel room thing lol).
I literally forgot all about my full time job Just today I was like oh, hope all is ok at the clinic, guess I have to return back there Oct 10th!

The shorter the leash, the better IMO. so much more control over your animal and it really increase safety for everyone. I can’t tell you how many times someone says oh my dog is friendly and they’re absolutely not, and I’m able to with one swift tug have complete control over my dog and we going the other way while person still trying to wrangle their animal who is trying to get it the other dog
