The photos some of my friends are posting from my old neighborhood in Brooklyn are insane. Friends who have garden level bedrooms are dealing with 2-3 feet of water again after just rebuilding from a similar situation a year or 2 ago, I feel terrible for them. Flooding seems to be an increasing issue for NYC (add it to the list I guess).

It’s terrible out there! Governor of NJ also declared a state of emergency as of 3:00. I hope everyone stays safe! The video velar shared on fb of the flooding in subways earlier today was unbelievable!

I couldn't make it into my office today because all of the subway lines remotely close to me shut down. At my normal station, there was basically a river running between the tracks. I even walked a mile to a station with several lines hoping one would be running, but I just wound up back at my house, completely soaked.
I'm pretty lucky though, my building is fine and the streets in my neighborhood have mostly drained by now.
The pictures are just bonkers. Stay safe y’all and I hope all loved ones make it home soon!
Was this weather expected?
We knew it would be rainy this weekend and now this just happens when it rains enough. Personally, I wouldn't say that I was expecting this, but I am not surprised.

Got it. I feel that way about rain here, too. It can go from scattered showers to flooded streets in a second. It honestly looks like hurricane flooding though so wasn’t sure if this was a forecast gone wrong or something expected. Awful either way.

Shockingly, Staten Island had some heavy rain in the morning and some of my work buildings saw some minor flooding and leaks, but it was mostly okay. Overall it was Brooklyn and Queens that got the brunt of this in the city. Some suburbs got hit hard too. Friends in Westchester saw their basements flooded. Colleagues are having trouble commuting home now - we closed early to give them more time.
We aren’t even out of this yet but I’m already tired of the Monday morning quarterbacking. Forecasts aren’t perfect. I’m more angry at the employers working from home who didn’t tell their non-essential staff to stay the hell home. But I do think we need to get a lot more accustomed to rain causing terrible issues more often and shutting down stuff even though the idea sounds silly. But, climate change.

TBH, we had remnants of Ophelia come up here last weekend and we all expected that to be horrible and it wasn’t. Today there wasn’t as much warning because the worst of it started overnight and it wasn’t tied to a tropical storm or anything.
I was posting on FB this morning about how it’s barely rained in my part of the city for months so I wasn’t prepared with rain boots and stuff. Suddenly we are getting deluged this week. We just have to get more used to more flash floods due to climate change. What also frustrates me is that housing is sooooo expensive here (always was, but now it’s worse) that there are still so many people living in flood zones and/or basement apartments due to affordability issues. So we aren’t really preparing for the inevitable.

TBF, 5 inches of rain in 24 hours is an absurd amount of water.

@@@@
Thanks. She was able to get on an express bus so is on her way home. Big relief. And thanks for putting the @ in your reply. I totally spaced out and didn’t add it, but your post reminded me so I put it in. Sorry everyone!
*** I thought I quoted goldengirlz here. I guess I messed it up.
We called my in-laws in Staten Island and they were totally unaware of what was happening which is puzzling and a little worrying in and of itself but at least they are okay?
Does the city have plans to improve drainage? I know even on regular rainy days it never seemed great and these big storms seem to happen fairly frequently now.

Unless they live in one of the neighborhoods badly hit by Sandy, it’s not surprising they were puzzled. It’s been raining here but nothing unusual. The worst of the storm hit just east of us.
"Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies-"God damn it, you've got to be kind.”

You’d think they know how the rest of the city is doing lol It’s all I see in the news and social media and we are hours away!
They’ve had some water issues in the past (they are near-ish the ferry) but nothing horrible.
It’s amazing how different the rain fall is in such a relatively small area.

Last weekend I was supposed to go to an event in Baltimore that was postponed due to Ophelia. Tomorrow, I’m supposed to go to an event that is supposedly all set up and still on - I just worry about getting there and parking. :/ (I’m a bit over 100 miles away.)

I grew up in the tropics with regular hurricanes where an inch an hour happened regularly, and it still caused flooding in a place used to it. I'm currently in monsoon season in the tropics, and we still don't have that amount.
