I would be incredibly surprised if Adam Schiff isn't appointed.
Really?
He seems like an unlikely candidate given that Newsom first said he would appoint a black woman and now says he won't appoint anyone currently running (which excludes Schiff, Lee and Porter)

Oh, well, I guess that makes sense in that this expected vacancy was going to happen sooner rather than later. I suppose Newsom doesn't want to appear to play favorites as at least a couple of the people who are running (Schiff and Porter) are pretty high profile, and no reason for him to do so when the constituency will be voting on it soon enough.
I still expect Adam Schiff to have the seat after the election, even if he isn't appointed.
The first name that came into my mind is Malia Cohen, the current State Controller who is also a former member of the SF Board of Supervisors and State Board of Equalization.
Karen Bass, current mayor of LA, former House rep and State assembly rep, could also be another potential pick.

. Karen Bass is great. I’d love to have her in the senate.

As a side note, I hope Pelosi sees this all as a wake up call and removes herself from next year's race.
She won’t, but I will be poised if she runs and wins and then wants the speakership back. I’ve resigned myself to the olds hanging around but I’ll be pissed if they make new leadership’s role harder
Great choice! I don’t know if anyone could have predicted that. She owns property in CA but she’s currently residing in Maryland and needs to change her residency back.
I know people love to hate Newsom. He definitely gives me the schmoozey politician vibe and I’m constantly expecting him to disappoint but I feel like he has done some genuine listening and learning. I’m sure he still wants to run for president (in 2028?) but I don’t think it’s all an act to appeal to voters. As long as he is following through with what he says he will do in the best interest of our country and the people in it, with a progressive anti-conservative agenda, I’m fine with it.

I don’t hate Newsom as governor either as much as I find him kind of distasteful as a person. He holds the party line for the most part and it’s hard to name another state that out-liberals California.
The biggest negative about his politically leanings might be that he’s very cozy with Silicon Valley and the entertainment industry, which means he walks a tight line when it comes to business and economic issues. He’s currently spouting a lot of bluster about San Francisco (which I alluded to above) … but people who live and work in the city are pretty fed up so … he’s not exactly wrong.
Anyway, this is all digression. I’m excited about this choice for us!

This made local chatter because her voter registration form apparently spelled the town wrong and it's a bit of a joke around here how often people f that up.
it's not Silver SpringS. It's just silver spring dammit. ONE SPRING.

Maybe she's a big Fleetwood Mac fan!
Extra funny to me since we have people drop an S from my employer all the damn time.
I saw a video on social media yesterday where a guy was defending a previous comment he made that a large amount of Congress was educated by teachers born in the 1800s. He did the math and showed his work. Anyone 70+ has a good chance they had elementary school teachers born in the late 1800s 😮
I always think about how much the world changed in my Grandparents’ lifetimes. Of course there’s knowledge and life experience but I think the country would be better off it it were ran by people who represent the country’s demographic.

There is, however, a silver springS in Florida. My step grandparents lived there. Maybe she was looking at future retirement property and got confused

I might need this spelled out for me (math is not my forte). Someone 70 years old would have been born in 1953, right? I don't think most schoolteachers were/are in their 50s. What am I missing/doing wrong?

(But I agree with the overall sentiment)
Most of mine were (I was born in the early 80s). I mean, I'm assuming about a few but looking back, young teachers were the exception.

Retirement age is 65 so his point was from grades K-6 you’d have a good chance of having at least one year of elementary school with a teacher near retirement age. If you look at all the people in congress from ages 70-90, that means even younger teachers, in their mid-30s and up could have been born in the late 1800s, and even more chance that a student would have multiple teachers from that generation.
I suppose female teachers may have skewed young if they weren’t allowed to work after marriage but there were male teachers, nuns at catholic school, etc.
