I chose the first option. But my reason for going to self checkout is not because I am an introvert but so I can bag my own groceries. I prefer going in a line with a cashier and no bagger but that doesn’t usually happen.
I am an extrovert and choose self-checkout entirely based on the ease of the items I need to check out. For example, less than 10 items, shorter line, simple scannable items, etc.
I hardly say more than “hello, yes, I got everything …. yes, these are my bags, you can pack them heavy … no, the milk does not need to be bagged … thank you” to the checkout person.
If anything, I am the chatty person if there is a conversation. I am never annoyed by it or seek it out. I mostly experience self-checkout as more work and glitchy.

I am a whatever line is shortest checkout person. I hate that some stores are only self-serve now. It causes lines and confusion for those who aren’t able to handle checking out. There should always be at least one person who can hop on a register.
I despise self checkout, has nothing to do with being introvert or extrovert. I will use it if I have just a couple of items (nothing like fruit or veggies that need a code and need to be weighed) otherwise I'm waiting for a cashier.

It’s more store dependent. Some stores I like the cashiers and their chatter and packing skills better, so I’ll do a line. Otherwise I agree with others that I am picky and better about packing so I do self checkout.
Maybe this is #regional, but how much small talk are you doing with the cashier that prompted this poll? I usually exchange the typical hi/how are you pleasantries and then go straight to bagging groceries. (The only exception is TJ’s — those folks are chatty! But in a way that usually makes me smile.)
I prefer self-checkout because I’m fast at it and the line generally moves faster because there are more machines.
The poll was literally prompted by me wondering if there was a link (which is not the same as a cause). I hear people complain a lot about self checkout for many and varied reasons, none of which have to do with small talk or lack of. I did label it as a dumb poll.
FWIW, I (strongly introverted) always pick self-checkout at Target mostly because lines are shorter but also because the woman who works there is so friendly. Yesterday I learned from her that you should put nylons in the freezer to keep them from running. Have not tried nor fact-checked, but there you go.

Although I'm an introvert, I will choose whichever way will get me out of there faster. I have been to Walmart where all the self check-outs are full and there is a checker standing there with an empty lane.
Introvert - I generally choose self-checkout. Unless I know I'm buying something that is going to need assistance, like a gift card.
Also, self checkout at Stop & Shop HATES me. It's always beeping at me about something in the bagging area, even if I do everything perfect. I pick cashier at Stop & Shop, because I end up dealing with a cashier MORE at self checkout.

I bag my own groceries in the checkout line. I'm that person. I probably shouldn't admit that here because it's a lot. lol
I'm an introvert, but bring back the cashiers. I'm tired of ringing and bagging all my groceries. I've always bagged but this expectation that I'm to do it all is too much. Costco is annoying with checking the receipt on the way out, but one day someone checked my card on the way in, before I checked out, then they checked my receipt when I finished ringing up my stuff and again at the door. Shortly after, I went to my local Aldi and found they had installed self checkouts. I thought "I'm going to start stealing." I wouldn't, but now I notice all these signs about how many things you are allowed to self-check at the big supermarket, when your receipt will be checked, etc. I think a lot of people are just walking out with cart loads of groceries. I'm not sure I blame them. Hire people to check my groceries out. Stop cutting your own costs at every turn, yet still raising prices. When I have already worked all day and then I have to drag myself around the grocery store and ring it all up do not try to make me stop to check my receipt. You either trust me to work this second job or you don't.

Based on how stores are rolling out self check out, I try not to use them anymore. It was nice when I was just getting one or two items to get out of there quick. But now stores are wanting us to use them for full carts of groceries and not staffing lanes. Most stores in my area don’t even have cashier lines open or they only have one and then expect tons of people to go through the self check out with cart loads of groceries or a bunch of item. The areas are not even big enough to hold people’s groceries plus you’ve got people fumbling through the self check out. I would rather stores hire enough people to serve the customers quickly and efficiently, then force everyone to check out their own stuff.
I especially hate self check out at Walmart. The area to check out is so tiny, you have almost everyone with cart loads of groceries, and many people who just don’t have the skill set to operate the technology. They have one lane open with a cashier. Every area has lines wrapped around the store practically. It would be much faster and more efficient to have trained cashiers working through those lines. Repetition gives speed.
I’ve started to see smaller stores and gas stations at a self check out feature. While those would be nice when I’m just grabbing a drink, and I would like to avoid the line, I don’t want to utilize the feature because I’m afraid it will lead to an all self check out system.
My decisions are based on efficiency. Our stores have been expanding self checkout areas so there’s rarely a wait for those. I’ll use those for full carts if it’s faster. Plus, I use my own bags and many cashiers don’t like dealing with that.
I'm an introvert and I love self-checkout. I worked retail as a teen/college student and can check myself out faster than some of these kiddos today! LOL.
Introvert and I hate self check. I feel like 80% of the time something doesn’t work and I have to call over a cashier anyway. Plus I usually have my kids with me and it’s much easier to wrangle them (esp the toddler) when I’m not also scanning stuff.

Self checkout is fine for 10 items or less only. GAVEL lol! When I have a cart full, I want a professional to take care of it! I can’t even fathom any of you who can bag better yourselves. I load stuff in the order I want and it gets bagged a million times better than I could do it because I’m rushing when I self checkout because I feel like pressure or something! Basically Aldi, Walmart and Target have forced you into self checkout and I hate that.

This, to the letter, even the bags. It’s a matter of efficiency, not desire or reluctance to chat.

Totally! And then I have to wait and everyone has to wait and it’s beeping at me because I didn’t put the jarred tomatoes in the specific part of the weighted area that ensures I’m not stealing.
Also, I didn’t know so many people here hated self checkout. The only other place I see people bitching about it so much is in the Aldi FB group I’m in. I assumed they were all old, but maybe not.

I hate it at Aldi because the screens ask if you are done every 5 seconds and you can’t bag as you go. I don’t like to shop frequently and it’s awful piling all my groceries in the tiny area. I’m always seeing people’s food roll away. But last time I was there no one was on register at all.

That’s what the Aldi group complains about too. That doesn’t faze me; it’s not even a person. I see other comments in here about rushing and pressure, and that’s not something I experience at the self checkout. If I did, I guess I probably wouldn’t like it either.
Although many stores only have self check-out as the option with a cashier as back-up only. I've seen this at Target and Kroger.
But last time I was at Target they have implemented a 10 items or less self check-out rule, so maybe they are hiring more people to be cashiers now.
This would be a nightmare at my Target. They usually only have one register open, and the self-check line is always PACKED. And at Target it's so easy to have a dozen little items.
You're able to shop in your Target?!?!? Huge sections of our Target are behind lock and key and you need to get someone to unlock the cabinets in order to purchase... which turns into an automatic no purchase for me. So gone are the days of going in for 2-3 items and strolling through aisles and leaving with a full cart of treasures. If I need something from Target, I order for pickup.
Also to answer the question.. generally introverted, but I hate self checkout. If I have 1-2 small/simple things, sure, but if I have anything substantial, especially produce, I'm going to a cashier.
