BIL works at a food store and he comments on how much theft there is now. Between self check out and not having bags anymore (you have to bring your own) people walk out with carts of groceries.
I despise the plastic bag ban and self check out. 🤣 I never go to self checkout unless I literally have under 5 items.
“The ad says this is supposed to be 1.39 a pound-you charged me 1.49!” 20 minutes of looking through ad, sending someone to area to check price, turns out customer was looking at wrong thing, customer gets angry and decides “WELL I DON’T WANT THEM” and inside I just want to give them the .10 and move on.
Or a sweet old lady slowly pulls out her check book once the whole grocery order is rung up. That act alone almost sends me to an early grave. The world is a better place if I can just go to self-checkout lol. I know I am a monster with zero patience.
This would be a nightmare at my Target. They usually only have one register open, and the self-check line is always PACKED. And at Target it's so easy to have a dozen little items.
You're able to shop in your Target?!?!? Huge sections of our Target are behind lock and key and you need to get someone to unlock the cabinets in order to purchase... which turns into an automatic no purchase for me. So gone are the days of going in for 2-3 items and strolling through aisles and leaving with a full cart of treasures. If I need something from Target, I order for pickup.
Mine too and I now refuse to shop there! It's impossible to find anyone to open the cabinets for you and once you eventually get someone they pressure you to make your selection immediately or tell you they'll come back once you've decided. Sometimes i want to smell the soap before I decide!
it’s just my lack of patience and the fact I always get stuck behind a person writing a check or someone arguing about how their apples were supposed to be .16 cheaper and start pulling out the circular. 🤯😡
This is a big part of it for me as well. Self-checkout has a communal line, so anyone causing a holdup doesn’t impact the people behind them - they can just go to another register. But in a cashier lane, you’re stuck.
the only thing that goes into my decision making process on this is how many things I am buying. Small basket? Self check out. Full cart? Full service. Mostly because I feel it goes faster when they are packing my bags for me. It seems like it takes longer for folks to take an item out of their cart, scan it, put it in a bag, rinse and repeat for self checkout than it does for someone to take out all their items, another person to scan it, and a third person to bag it, you know?
In BC we can buy wine in select grocery stores! It’s mostly convenient, except when I also want beer or liquor.
loira In ON we have a beer cooler aisle at the Superstore! Wine is in the store, but after the checkouts in like a mini-store of its own.
Oh interesting ! heygrey I hardly ever go to Superstore so I wouldn't have noticed, but honestly have never seen wine at either Save On or Thriftys or any of the big chains on the island. Apparently people in the interior have it better! I do know Thriftys has its own liquor store but it's basically a separate store, like momin2013 mentioned.
I ultimately prefer self checkout so I don't have to turn off my podcast, and to avoid certain cashiers. There are a couple at my local store that are just too, too chatty with a smidge of judgemental thrown in. Now if I have a fuller cart and I can see one of the cashiers I know isn't chatty I will go through the regular line. But seriously, don't judge me for getting a plastic bag. We reuse them at home! They aren't going right to the trash!

All depends on how many items i have in my cart. I did get frustrated the other day, when there were barely any good checkout options so i used self-checkout and they wanted to check my receipt on the way out. Um, no if you are basically forcing me to check out myself then you trust me.
There are so many variables to consider. In terms of "vert-ness" I would consider myself mostly neutral. I'm friendly but need a considerable amount of me-time.
I prefer to pack my own things. I don't want the produce I spent time selecting getting banged about by some teen or old guy. I generally carry in my perishables and have my son haul in the rest. Sometimes I shop for my mom and need her stuff bagged differently so I don't end up missing a key ingredient for dinner because some bozo dropped it into one of her bags to be helpful.
Some self-checkouts don't work well if you bring reuseable bags from home. The store where I buy DS's flavored seltzer has a scale weight limit that goes off if I buy more than a dozen bottles. Another store I rarely shop has only 4 self-checks; if they're occupied by older folks or moms letting their kiddos scan, I use a regular lane. If I'm buying beer/wine (in PA), I have to be rung up by an employee at a designated register by law so it's simpler to let that person ring up the order if it's a small one.
I hate self check out. It's stressful to have all those messages and beeps yelling at you--same reason I dislike video games. Not fun! It can never recognize my own bags. And if I just want to carry out an item in my hand it is like PUT IT IN THE BAG, LADY. And I always FEEL like I'm accidentally stealing something so my "today is the day I end up in jail" underlying paranoia kicks in.
I don't do the grocery shopping, but my husband who does also avoids self check out. He goes at like 7am on a Sunday and has a favorite checker and bagger. They're friendly, to the point where he has commiserated with them both about how a mean and terrible checker and bagger got promoted and was giving one of them informal legal advice about a situation her son was facing.
The man barely speaks in public, except when he does and then he really does.
None of the above? Whether I use self check out depends on which has the longer lines and how much I’m checking out. If I have a cart full of food, I don’t consider it. If I’m at Costco and have 40 lb bags of cat litter or dog food (even if it’s the only item in the cart), I don’t consider it.
I HATE the self check out when I have more than a few items. There just isn’t enough room.
