We had to put our 15 year old baby down on Monday.
We had just got a refill of her seizure meds, and some meds for fluids and steroids. These were fairly expensive and I would hate to see them go to waste. Can these be donated to a shelter that might use them?

I'm not sure how strongly pet meds are controlled, but it wouldn't hurt to try donating
Shelters might have too high of a turnover to diagnose or use meds like that - I would check with rescues that might have dogs longer. Or, see if your vet would take them back to maybe give to a client who can't pay.

I work at an animal hospital and oftentimes clients will give the meds to us. We can't resell them but we can donate them. If they are a common medication that a pet would be on long term we can do a computer search to see who is on these meds and call and offer them to the client for free with the understanding that they were donated. We usually try to choose someone who has had a lot of vet bills, people we know are hurting for money, or people who are really nice If its a medication that is not a long term medication (antibiotics etc) we keep them in our "donated meds" bin and when someone comes in with money troubles and a sick pet we look in that bin and see if we have any donated meds we can use for them.
